So i made it out wednesday morning in OCNJ. So damn foggy i couldnt tell the conditions until i actually paddled out and was the only guy out between 54 and 60 so far as i could tell. Surfing was ok but man it was creepy. i couldnt even see the beach at times. no wind, no sound but for the water and the occasional splash. I found myself talking and singing to myself to distract myself from the heebie jeebies. anyone else do that when alone in the fog/dark, etc? finally paddled up closer to some old fisherman near the pier so a least someone might see me if i got et. postscript: come afternoon when temps soared to 70 and the wind went offshore, a couple other dudes showed up to share november paradise. guy said there were 25 people out that morning at waverly pl bumping into each other in the fog. crazy
I have never surfed in fog that bad, but I think I would feel the same way you did. Def would have been talking and singing to myself as well
Super foggy few days ago here in NC too. Couldnt even see my truck on the beach and it wasnt breaking that far out. Pelicans everywhere. Wood floating all over. Some fun headdips and the occasional small air section tho so it was ight.
I had a morning like that sometime this summer. It's damned eerie for sure. The fun part is when a nice HH set comes in and you have 10ft of distance to react. Keeps you on your toes. Next time you're out in the fog just picture a dead body floating up next to you from beneath. That will put you at ease. We used to do that as kids to mess around...we referred to them as "dudes".
I "know" that there aren't big angry sharks down there but wasnt worried about the dead bodies but rather a live one with those "dead eyes" didnt have to worry about HH unless we were talking about the other head. the sets were 3'
Yeah man I'm looking foward to it a lot. Start a thread to introduce yourself, it'll help these guys to help you more. As far as fog...I like it. Provided it's not cranking/sketchy. But it has a peaceful vibe imo. Not fun trying to spot buoys 1/4 mile away w/ only 100 foot visibility though. As far as talking to myself, all the time.
King & I - I Whistle A Happy Tune Lyrics Whenever I feel afraid I hold my head erect And whistle a happy tune So no one will suspect I'm afraid While shivering in my boots I strike a careless pose And whistle a happy tune And no one ever knows I'm afraid Haven't thought of this song in 40 years! I always talk and or sing to myself, and the sea birds, when I'm out by myself...
wed afternoon was fun in Monmouth county.. waist high and solid. I talk to myself under normal circumstances. Chris
I've had a few sessions like that at the Inlet and PAFB, so foggy you can't see the water from the sand and can't see the sand from the water. Literally like 5-10 feet of visibility. Paddle out thinking nobody is out, but when I got out back I found a little crew of people out there. Everybody was catching waves and having a great time but occasionally we would almost hit each other because you can't see em till it's the last second. it's pretty fun actually, but I hear what you're saying.
I talk to myself constantly even on clear small days. Always imagine someone on the beach with binoculars watch g me and wondering what the hell I'm doing. P
lol I love the fog.yea I wouldn't paddleout in the fog in anything over 6ft,but a nice little 3 ft day with dense fog is awesome.plus driving through fog is pretty cool.i like not being able to see things because I know they cant see me.back in the day when it got foggy it was dangerous on the streets.thats when the crazies come out to play
any situation that seems scary I always start singing 3 little birds in my head by marley.just the chorus, dont worry.........about a thing.... it helps.it helps calming down u never went adrenaline to take control of your thinking, thats when people panic and they die.so don't worry
Must've been around '96-'97. All by myself at 2nd cove pleasure island. Reeled all the way to the beach. After awhile I started to wonder if there had been a shark attack that I didn't hear about. I was the only one out. After an hour or so I got out. I passed a guy on the way back to the truck. He said "what's wrong man not good enough for you?" Solid head high glass that day. I turned around.
A foggy Wednesday morning. Paddled out not quite knowing what I'd find. Found two others out. As the morning progressed and the fog cleared, others stated paddling out. Fairly clean, waist to chest high conditions. I enjoy those foggy early AM sessions, particularly in the summer. In Calif, used to enjoy going diving in the morning when it was foggy and the water glassy. Liked hearing the fog horns. But whenever I get that sketchy feeling, I start singing: "I'm Popeye the sailor man..."
