Why are surf movies SO artsy fartsy now?

any douche can do anything they want, but that doesn't mean they're going to be good at it.

it's very hard for a rookie videographer/cinematographer to buy a $2000 setup and magically make a good video. you need to know about aperture, iso, shutter speed, white balance, the right lens to use for the occasion (for dslr filmmakers at least), where to be positioned in the water for in-water shots, developing a steady hand for in-water shots, knowing how to use your tripod, how zoomed in/out you are on the surfer, know where to cut when editing, and on and on and on.

it's a lot harder than you think to make a proper "artsy fartsy" video.

True but I feel there's still a market- I paid for Attractive Distractions recently, I was already interested in it and some dude told me it was sick. What the requirements are to succeed in that market, I do not know- this flick was high budget with some high profile dudes.

It's cool to access surf clips at the stroke of a keyboard, and it's even cooler that filmmaking technology is available to everyone... But advertising and marketing are even stronger now than before. All this footage is
'free', but you have to watch advertisements.

At least when buying skate/surf vids you didn't have to see some bull**** commercial. Plus, it was cool to get a vid that everyone was hyped for, and watch it with the (not so) shredder buds. Now I just watch this sh*t alone, wallowing in FOMO silently because I don't have Instagram.

For skater guys out there, who remember 411 Video Magazine, was there a surf equivelent to this? 411 was the shiz in the pre-internet days.

oh man i wish i grew up on 411. i was born at the peak of 411.

it must have been magical popping in that vhs tape and watching that opening montage for the first time.

ah man i'd give anything to be born 10 years earlier

It was magical. That and getting Thrasher in the mail... having the skateshop and skatepark as the headquarters of the scene, rather than facebook. Those were the days. Golden age of skateboarding if you ask me, without all these pansy-asses running around with little plastic boards to get chicks.

Anyway, I used to wish I was born earlier also. But I think that's common to people who feel like they don't fit into their area/society. For this reason I will advise you of three things:
    1- Learn Spanish.
2- Travel as early and as frequently as possible. I wish I hit up the world at 17/18- there are places where you won't wish you were born ten years earlier. And they are awesome.
3- Seize the moment, little dude. Embrace your timeframe in world history and kick its ass.

Grainofsand, I will have to look for some 411 surf footy. I had no idea.

not all artsy fartsy surf videos have bad surfing in it.

i know good surfing when i see it, and i appreciate all styles of surf videos, old and new. sure it's alright to hate on sh!tty surfing in a video, but it's completely unnecessary to hate on the style of the video if its put together well.

the big difference with the Sterling is he's poking fun at all these artsy fartsy people. the parody is what makes it entertaining. dude likens himself to a centaur. he rules.
