OK..naivety here...can someone explain what a troll is exactly, what "trolling" is, and why it's detrimental?

I don't frequent forums, this is the first one I've really participated in and I see the term all the time.

I assume it's someone that "lurks" but I've seen the term used to describe several different things and activities.

I too did not understand that, correct me if im wrong but I believe it is when one is trying to cause trouble or talk smack in order to get a rise out of others. Its usually done by non regulars or people with few posts and such and all they do is cause trouble they never really put worthwhile material in.

 

I've always wondered about those names...the trifecta mentioned by Emass...bc their names are always in that little viewed profile thingy...if they were mods I think someone would know...
