This is for all you Massachusets dudes. I'm applying to schools for transfer in the fall and I'm still pretty undecided. I was looking into Mass College of Art and Design in Boston and was curious if there were any decent breaks in the area? Don't gotta name names, just a simple yes or no would suffice. Thanks for the help in advance.
Depends what you consider "decent". Around the city? I say no. epictetus the troll says yes. If you're into design, you may want to scope RISD and hit Newport on the reg. You'll be in a cleaner place and get way more waves. But you'll have to deal with Rhodey cats and you see how some of them behave on here lol Oh, btw, as many natives here say "Bawwwstonnnn" as Californians call their home "Cali".
No decent breaks in the area. It's Boston bro. Apparently there is a wave by yankee lobster in the harbor. Should be plenty of rich wahines and nerdy sports drunks however. Also u burger
Anything "decent" within at least a 20-30 min drive would be fine with me. And I would love to go to RISD, but that is 60 grand a year I do not have my friend. Trying to stay out of the hole the best I can, while still going to a decent art school.
Go to harpoon brewery find the surfer dude he'll show you the break. Pretty sure it sucks though. Like yeah you surfing but not really kinda deal.
How much is SCAD? Savannah is supposed to be beautiful. You have Georgia surf to deal with but at least it's on the ocean. 20-30 minutes from the city won't get you much in Beantown for surf. 45-60, different story.
SCAD never crossed my mind. To be completely honest, I didn't think it was that close to the beach haha. I will look into that, thanks hombre. As far as Mass Art, I think you have talked me out of it. I'll probably still apply, just because it is relatively cheap and a pretty good school.
Do NOT underestimate the value of the Southern Belle. Yeah bro, it's right there on the SC line. Tybee Island I think is the headland to surf at. I may be wrong about that. There are probably a few spots along the coast. Short drive I believe.
As many knowledgeable older guys have said on here I'll reiterate for you.. "Don't pick a skool with waves as one of the reasons, pick a skool were you can get a good education, make good sauce when you graduate and live somewhere for life that has good waves or take surf trips every year"... lifetime of goodwaves>4 years of great waves... of course you can look at it like I do and go somewhere with great waves then make good sauce and then move somewhere with good waves, best of both worlds
That's what I'm saying! There are plenty of Good schools near the ocean. I don't need great waves, but I need something.
Oh, trust me I do not underestimate. I've had a southern belle or two in my day and they are very, very giving. And yes, it says tybee island is only a short 15 miles. The way I drive, that's only a 10 minute drive!
Close to Newport is definitely a good place to take a look. Those breaks are consistent with the swells and you can test yourself at a couple of great spots. Being these breaks are where I surf everyday there are waves, I'd say you wouldn't be disappointed. I am not a Rhodey native but live there for half the year. And even if you were in Boston, on good days that drive is certainly worth the paddle out.
Wasn't dumping on your dreams little buddy...just keepingz it real...I still love art and do some free lance and gallery work but the money....let's just say I was over eating RAMEN NOODLES daily by age 23...most of my friends who also graduated with various art degrees now work in resturaunts waiting and bussing tables...over saturated market.....
I know man haha, I was just joshing. I know the odds aren't incredibly in my favor, but that sure as hell doesn't mean I am not going to try. Life is too short brotha, I could be dead tomorrow, least I can do is follow my passion and give it a good go.
I'll do that man, always enjoy sharing/seeing others work. I'm 24 just for some reference, not that much of a kid, by age standards at least, maturity wise I'm still a 14 year old. I switched my major 3 times, got sick of not knowing what the hell I wanted to do with my life, and took a year off from school. I was always decent at drawing, hadn't done it in years though. I started taking pictures and fell in love, said f*** it and started going to school for fine arts with a concentration in photography at my local community college. Picked drawing back up like it was second nature, I'm now excelling in my classes and thoroughly enjoy going to school. I refuse to live a dull, boring life doing the same sh** day in and day out.
The odds aren't in your favor, but you can tilt them, depending on where you go. What type of art do you make? Do you want to be a 'fine' artist (painter/sculptor), a graphic designer, an illustrator, or some combination of the three? Do you want to be a muralist, or make custom furniture? For all of these things, there's certain programs that will get you there. Some are college, some are not. A general fine-art degree will not get you sh*t for work, unless you make good connections in school. Even then, you would probably be an artist's assistant. I know people who work for famous artists (Chuck Close etc) and it's not glamorous, and there's not much room for advancement. If you want to be an artist, you might be best served getting an IT degree or something where you can work three days a week from anywhere while affording your studio. Or apply to Cooper Union and apply again next year after you're denied.
