1-5 top five most consistent places to find rideable fun waves. Flat spell is killing me but really was interested that the outer banks got some chest high+ swell from that low pressure system on Saturday. 15 second period really jacked up the swell that we even had but was still waist high at best in oc. Interested if anyone has any feedback for any of these places, best bets, worst bets. My list goes somewhat as follows, 1. OBX. 2. North Florida. 3. New Jersey. 4. Long Island. 5. Northeast? (Rhode island, CT). Also interested if anyone on here has given a shot at living in the OBX area, job wise, storms, relocating, etc
I live in Nags Head. The jobs are summer based, the storms are brutal but end with really nice waves. When its flat here the only thing to do is bury your truck in mud or hunt. But when there waves (which is basically all the time) you wont regret living on an island of shame.
Flat spell...we had workable surf three days this week...One of which only worked in SOUTHJERSEY.....
Right now, I'm thinking that VB, located more or less in a "coastal cul-de-sac", might make the consistently lousy list. It has its moments, but they seem to be more the exception than the rule. When I consider relocating or retiring to places like OBX, the realities of such things as ongoing storm damage repair, being cut off from medical services (we have a special needs daughter), and the cost of flood and hurricane insurance come to mind. But folks down there find a way to live with all that, and I admire them for it. Nevertheless, if it was just me and no family, I'd consider living there. If I couldn't surf, I'd fish, crab, SUP, kayak, windsurf, or sail.
1. Belmar, NJ 2. Myrtle Beach , SC 3. South Beach,Miami,FL 4. Boston Habah, MA 5. Naples Pier, Naples, FL
You nailed it Dos. VB pretty much sucks most of the time surf-wise. It's saving grace is that it's just over an hour to the outer banks, and it's a big enough metropolitan area that there's some decent non surf-related stuff to do when it's flat. That, and there are good jobs here too.
I may be a little biased cause its my home town but Ocean City, NJ is hard to beat for consistency and being close to other good spots. If there is any swell to be had its likely going to be good somewhere in Ocean City. We've got a good variety of breaks within a mile of beach in the north end thanks to the variety of jetties and sand bars and the south end can get good when the wind and swell is right. You also have an easy drive to places like AC or Cape May or places North to get the wind or swell direction right. The only place better I've found on the East Coast is Buxton/Frisco where you have two different facing beaches minutes apart.
1. new symrna 2. OBX (just cause its breaking somewhere along it probably) 3. definitely not new england (unless nor easters be hovering off our coast) 4. definitely not new england 5. definitely not new england but mostly the east coast is just consistently flat.
