Here's why it's ok that I'm not that good a surfer. My Christmas present was a surf trip to Santa Cruz, CA. The waves were small, knee to waist high, so, I decided to surf steamer's lane since I'm not good enough to surf there when it's going off. I ended up catching some fun little waves. Since the waves were so small there weren't many people in the line up and the butthole/local/double overhead barrel DBs were NOT there!! Only the mellow long boarders, some beginners, and me. SCORE! Happy New Year!
Such a nice wave. Driving down hwy 1 the number of open beautiful beach breaks is impressive. But its clear why SC is so desirable.
I did a trip to California in November with my son. By California standards the surf was small. Pretty much waist to shoulder high every day for a week with a few head high waves thrown in. Surfed some of the premier spots with very few people around. Even had really fun Upper Trestles entirely to ourselves for about 45 minutes one afternoon. Waist to Chest High, low tide Upper Trestles is better than anything we have in New Jersey. What a blast. Best surf trip ever. I'd bet if the surf had been 1 foot bigger each day every session would have been a mob scene and we would have hated it.
The Lane. There was bigger surf to be had 30 min. to the North and South. Did the Sea Lions give you the creepy swim below, pop up next to you, barking welcome? SC is a great home base for a surf trip out there, because there is quite a few options within a 30 min drive. Glad you had fun in skunky town.
Yes, the sea otter was there to greet us! I should've gone up the coast a bit since the waves were small. My brother lives there and said that next time he'll ask some surfer friends of his to show me the spots and surf with me since some of the spots are tricky with lots of rocks.
+1 Most likely, but who knows, maybe the Lane really was that small? It happens. I was there back in March and it was anything but small though. But yeah, Cowell's is right there and easily mistaken for someone who doesn't know the difference i'm sure. I personally enjoyed surfing The Hook. It wasn't too crowded and I got to hang out with the sea lions, real chill those dudes. Next time i'm bringing them a happy meal for being so welcoming.
