hahahahahahaha. I did think that as well. But, if you can get bast his rampant douche-baggery, I think he does a fair job of getting at the core of what people like Rothman are constantly *****ing about.

It has and the purge is scheduled for next week, so I'm glad so many capitalist running-dogs are outing themselves.

Without jumping on the Rothman is a douche, or money is all that is great bandwagon, can anyone intelligently take a swing at what he, Kala, Flynn, Kalani, Alan, or I said? That includes you Oldsoul. You're an "old soul", but all you got is, "discuss"? C'mon man, you started the thread.

There are accounts which state that Bobs last words to his son Ziggy were "Money cant buy life."

i guess if the man can bring about some sort of quantifiable benefit to his community; well a rant
or two isn't entirely out of line. can't help but wonder if he is biting the hand that feeds him (others?).
also getting under-mentioned here is that hawaii, at least surfing-wise, is totally unique.

    Thumbs up Tlokein and Manisses.

    Three things to ponder:
1 Health is wealth. What portion of your possessions, and money would you give if you were incapacitated, not being able to leave your bed, or dieing, to go the other direction and do things like surf again?
2 I did a lot of work for Ira Walker (Google him). Ira has millions of dollars. Ira said to me, on more than one occasion, "I want what you have". He surely wasn't talking about my bank account. What did he mean?
3 My dog has no clue what money is, yet she is happier than a pig in sh!t, and filled with love. Why?

    +1

The displacement of locals happens on the mainland as well. Big money comes in and runs out anybody who doesn't side with their game. They buy local goverments and force families from their land through property taxes (legal theft) so they can ruin the landscape by massive over development of condos, shopping malls, chain resteraunts, walmarts ect. Then they market the place to people from off with money. Been watching it happen in Charleston for years. A handful of people profit while most locals are screwed.
If you live somewhere and it's nice don't let anybody know!

So Gaff, do you really think that surfing is finishing up a cycle and is headed back towards a period of fierce localism? If so, I'd be interested in your opinion as to why this will occur.

I'm sure Gaff will put together a much better response but my $.02.

Rise in popularity+SUPs rising in popularity+more $$$ to be made so more shops/camps/etc. renting/selling/putting more people in the water w/o any knowledge of etiquette or safety. Snowball effect w\ end result is more and more people in the water pissing off guys who know what they are doing out there and have been surfing that break for decades.

    I blame the N Koreans...and Wayne.

Thanks Doug. TBH I don't even mind people that just pursue wealth, if that makes you happy so be it. Its the people that screw anyone and everyone over in this pursuit that I deplore.

Make all the gold you want and bathe in it for all I care, but if you f people and\or the environment over to get there...skin them alive.

Understood, just trying to get a grip on why you believe so, and in what type of direction you believe it's going.

For reference, I began surfing in the areas around PB and the LJ reefs during the Chris O'Rourke / Huffman Bros. / Joe Roper era. It was rough. But it seemed like the whole Localism scene back then had to do less with crowds, and more with "isolationism", in conjunction with Californians as a whole being disenchanted with the contest scene during that time.

Anything that was "amp" or "flash" was chastened as not considered "soul". Locals stuck to their breaks and expected others to do the same, for the most part. Surfers felt disenfranchised with the commercialism that they felt was overwhelming the "art of surfing", and were quick to disassociate with anything that reflected it. Consequently, locals identified themselves by riding specific boards, wearing specific wetsuits, speaking specific dialects and not wearing goon cords (or whatever).

Then, of course, polka dot wetsuits and neon boards with guys like Danny Kwock and Joey Buran ushered in the 80's. Localism, for the most part, died...and a new era was born.

I guess the point I'm making is, is that if localism in its worst form should rise again, it appears that it will be for entirely different reasons.

I don't agree with everything Rothman stands for- but his rant in this video is pretty accurate in my eyes. While I believe money, or some form of currency that does not spoil, is needed to have a functioning civilization it obviously has its down falls. Like Gaff stated, people become consumed by this green god and forgo morals and ethics that make us human.

I don't see anything wrong with acquiring wealth, but if you are not smart about it you may sacrifice more that just 50 hours a week. The society we live in tells us to consume, naturally to consume/sustain you need money- to get money- you gotta work (legally or illegally lol) and then you buy what you think makes you happy but it doesn't because happiness comes from within, so you feel empty and the cycle repeats- all while your life ticks away.

Gotta find the balance, live simply so others may simply live. So many people in places all around the globe have been impoverished because of wealthy men and their business exploiting the land and resources. It is a shame. Look at the east end of long island... It would be nice to own some property out there with a humble home where I can grow produce and live a simply life, surf and still be close to family.. but it costs too much, the rich city folks have jacked the prices up... "a days wages for a loaf of bread"

Can we all chip in what we got, buy some land where its warm-ish and has waves- build an Earthship community out of recycled materials and live? We can plant fruit trees, farm and raise some livestock for you meat eaters.. chickens and such... it would be rad. We wouldn't need real jobs because we would have what we need to survive. To make money for luxuries we can rent out a few home-made yurts to make whatever money we need for taxes, gasoline/new boards.
