Surfed OB area last year and checked the ol capitan report but it wasnt working... As I hear its a once and blue moon type deal, at least for it to really turn on.
seen it "going off" at about 2-3' once during my travels to another spot. The Point has a severe bend in it, tending to knock down swell size but giving the spot perfect shape and long hollow sections. Misses a lot of normal swell activity because of it's geographical location. Oh, and one more thing: it's very rare to catch it breaking without the spot looking like fleas on a dog. The people who love that wave all know when it will be working. But I guess if you can get a good one with only a few guys in front of you, it might be worth it.
Haven't caught el capitan but I've surfed rincon a few times, words cannot describe how long and perfect the points in that area can be... however you do not just go surfing here... you go to war around here...if its anywhere near head high be ready to wait an hour or more to get a wave to yourself off the point and then when you do get your fists up and be prepared to literally fight your way down the line.. but get up early on a weekday and you might just score some of the best longest waves of your life... on another note the one wave in this area on my bucket list is sandpit.... droool but i would imagine the same type of situation here if not worse
to many people, it looks really good but i wouldnt surf it do to the constant battle for waves. i mean how is that even enjoyable and i bet there are a bunch of aggro kooks lol.
Depends, sometimes there can be order to a crowded lineup if you got the right people in it. I prefer surfing alone most times but when it's not an option I don't mind the crowd if they know what they are doing and aren't d*cks about it. But yeah I know what you mean. Sometimes there is just one jerk off and they are a crowd all by themselves. Had that happen too. I'd deal with a crowd for that wave if I didn't have to fight for every wave I caught. It's annoying after a while of having to look over your shoulder the whole time.
Caught it firing on my surf trip down the Pacific coast highway in november. About head high to overhead barrels, turning more slabby once the tide came up. Only me and one other guy trading off the main peak that went all the way through around the corner of the point where you have to race the rocks. About ten to fifteen guys out around the corner. Surfed there from morning to mid afternoon then high tailed it down to rincon point, and surfed it in the same day also firing. locals said it hadn't broke in weeks, maybe even months before i got there. Got super blessed that whole trip with dank surf, but surfing el cap and rincon in the same day followed by partying in Isla Vista at UCSB seemed like it was a day that would be deducted from my share in heaven after whatever this life is.
EL CAPITAN!! Yea caught it years and years ago while on a along the coast camp and surf trip. It was about chest hi. No wind. Oh... And no one else out but me and my buddy. I actually didn't know it was that popular that it's hard to catch empty...
