This isn't the worst idea, he might already have one, no reason it has to be super small.

No way dude...I would never ride my fish prone that's just stupid...riding a 54in board might work in ankle biter shore break...if it was say tree feet with steep faces you'd bounce down the line in an uncontrollable kook out...I mean what ever floats your boat but that's a lot of float....

When do you ride the fish instead of a boogie? I re-read the original question and I'm kind of afraid that a bodyboard might get old quick in the conditions he described.

Great. This is a good discussion. Maybe I could avoid fins altogether if I go with the beater. Be a good way toget my pads muscles back as well. I appreciate all the opinions and ideas I have been given.

I don't know the Gulf, but I'm afraid that might be mostly what Lipsmacker is talking about

Did anyone mention just riding prone on a regular board. I did this after breaking an ankle and it was fun enough when I was jonesing for a wave.

Ya that's right. Mostly knee to chest high with an odd head high or OH day. Even at waist high we have some spots that break pretty steep. These are the spots I would be trying to boogie.

Do you have a longboard? Buy a boogie, ride it if it is at least waist high and has some punch, you'll have fun and might keep doing it once you're better. If it's smaller and weak, arm paddle your longboard and ride it prone, it will be fun, you'll stay in shape, people who don't know you will think you are crazy, and once you are healed they will be afraid to drop in on you.

I just looked up "boogie boarding the beater" "bodyboard the beater" "prone beater" to try and visually explain that this would not look right... couldn't even find a video.

Go with a bodyboard, not a beater board.

I like the ones with the brillo pad on the green side for tough stains, and the yellow soft part on the other side for everyday grease, I think Scotch brite?

eh you know, livn a life

Also, I gotta say, the way you are pigeon holing beaters into the stand-up only category seems not not your MO, I thought all was possible? I know a guy who kneeboards in NJ at ____ and he uses a standard 6'7 step up rounded pin and just takes off late and deep and gets very pitted. might not be YOUR ideal combo of gear, but this guy gets pits with fins and a regular old surfboard

Nah MIS I wasn't trying to pigeon hole beaters...I've ridden them before...they just don't perform like BB when riding prone...i.e. lack of flex(for turns) and ability to hold an edge...Just trying to help this dude out cause you know Mr Doeski is a nice dude...
