He makes some good points though... me and my friends were talking about this the other day. I know a handful of local surfers that can surf better than half the guys on the ASP, some even win local contest. But not one of them has enough $ to buy a plane ticket halfway around the world to compete in some bs comp in less than ideal conditions. Not all but the majority of of surfers on the ASP where rich kids with there parents money who happened to be in the right spot at the right time. Sure after you get into the circus the sponsors and prize money will pay the way, but few can afford the ticket to get in. Capitalism is the nature of competitive surfing.
I lived in Hawaii for years and its true what he is saying, rich people come and take the land out from under them, I can empathize having seen it first hand. The Aloha spirit is not dead, it is just being suffocated.

 

I'm disrespecting them because they disrespect everyone else. They think they're such hot sh!t cuz they live on an island and are "locals". They are pathetic, they will never fight you one on one, and retarded ass surfing magazines and websties like surfermag and stab release all this propaganda bullsh!t about hawaiians being tough as sh!t and da hui being hardcore cuz they can gang up on skinny white surfer kids. Da hui would get there asses rapped,annilhated, decombulated and ransacked if they were to go against a hgih school gang in detroit. Legit. they would get the **** kicked out of them so much, that all the members of da hui would be either sent into a coma, suffer severe brain damage, or die from the amount of kciks to the head they received.

The disrespect of visitors is reactionary. The island is only so big, the spots can only handle so many people. Who cares how the local hawaiian surfer stacks up against some legit criminal thugs from the cities of the US. Not all violence against haoles is justified, I get it some locals are jerks to be jerks. But in a lot of cases it comes down to people who are curtious towards locals. Let them get their waves, let them get some of yours too. generally, if you wait your turn, take some hassling with some pride, and properly position yourself for the good waves you can get by.

Have you ever personally had an negative interaction with local surfers from Hawaii? Or you basing on this soley on Mr. Rothman's attitude?
