I put my board in a garage separate from the house and there is no heat. Would it be to cold out there for them thanks?

Ever realize how cold the water is during the winter? I think they'll be fine.

BEWARE!!!!! If your board is at all waterlogged I would not put it in there. I have had a board ruined because of this. If the board has any water in it, the water will freeze and expand, and could ruin your board.

Think about what will happen if you leave a glass bottle full of water outside over night.

This could be the same fate as your surfboard.

The bottom line is no, never ever keep your board where its gonna dip below freezing

Good advice. Never thought about it like that.

I agree. And even if your board isn't "waterlogged" any board with normal use will have little surface cracks. wet board+surface crack+store below freezing = larger cracks.

what about leaving them in a garage attached to your house?

if the garage is not heated (which most are not) then it is virtually the same thing as a detatched shed.

yea, those are good points but i mean i think my boards are good for the most part its not like it is below freezing here all the time during the winter any way.

actually an attached garage wouldnt be that bad considering it is an airspace insulator for the side of the house. So if you where going to build a surf rack in the attached garage try to put it closest to the heated portion of the house....I knew my HVAC class would come in use sometime

    Threw around some numbers:

    Average sized two car garage
Average Insulation factors for both garage and home
Inside temperature of home - 70 degrees

    Outside Temp - 20 degrees
    Garage Temp - 26 degrees

    Outside Temp - 32 degrees
    Garage Temp - 36 degrees

For the garage to be at freezing the outside temperature would have to be 27 degrees

Ya, I'm just warning you guys that I went out of town one time, all the boards were in the garage and the ones that were waterlogged were effected drasticly. They basically imploded from the inside at their weakest point. Luckily ONE of my boards was ok.

That being said, I don't think boards should be kept under any intense conditions hot (inside your car all day) or cold.

i never thought of it like that for the cold with the water freezing and expanding if you have cracks. luckily i just leave mine in my basement.

but i always thought leaving your board in a hot car is just a bad idea in the first place. melted waxe all over the place if its not in a board bag, possible de lam if its one of those super hot days, etc.

    Matt-
good stuff...i have a large two car garage, attached to the end of my house, average insulated. I winter over two huge potted palm trees that ive had forever inside the garage so i keep a couple of thermometers in the garage and turn on a portable heater when it looks like its gonna get below freezing inside the garage. After a few years of this BS just to hang on the freaking plants (they do look nice on the patio in the summer i guess):

outside temps all night above 25 - garage never gets below 35
    outside nightime temps 20 - 25 - garage gets to about 32
outside temps below 20- garage gets below 32 i run the heater.

As was said, putting the board rack on the common wall with the house would help.

I have an extra bedroom where I like to tuckmy surfboards into bed around 8:30 PM. Soft pillows and a thick comforter works for me. I like to turn out the lights and tell them bed time stories about the magical places they will one day get to visit. After that I close the door to let them rest until the next time.

    boars in garage

I've kept my boards in my unheated garage for 30+ years and never had a problem. If the board is water logged you ain't taking very good care of it to begin with.!!!

i would think the days that their trapped in a hot car are worse than dipping below freezing but thats just me. and remember its seawater were talking about not fresh water so the freezing point is gonna be a little lower too for you math calculators.
