No haha's on the forum! This place is no joke! Serious replys only, or else! My bad, I forgot. I'm really sorry again Johnny. Please don't banish me. I love you.
My daily driver is in the middle and the other two boards belong to my 15 year old. Mine is 6'6 and the others are 5'4 and 5'6 based on the same template.
Roy can explain it best. Oh sh!t, sorry Johnny, I did it again. I'm a bad Dougie. I'll get back in my cage now.
Nice...You shape those? Sorry not familiar. I saw CJ of Costa Mesa but he is different (pretty sure). What are the dims on the 6'6"? Your a bit heavier than me but still curious for scale.
"I have to laugh, because I've outsmarted even myself. My enemy, my foe, is an animal. In order to conquer the animal, I have to learn to think like an animal. And, whenever possible, to look like one. I've gotta get inside this guy's pelt and crawl around for a few days." ....getting old is serious stuff bro! kidding man.
^2nd on request for dims. Looks a lot like the Pug model I ride, it's a shape by Kenny Briel from Savage Surfboards. here she is all virgin.
Yewwww! Good eye! That's some classic sh!t. I have a soft spot for the Lost V2 Stub btw, 6'0". I'm a similar height and weight to you. The board is crazy versatile.
Yes those are my shapes. I'm not the guy on the West Coast with the same initials. The 6'6 is 21.75 wide and 2.75 thick. Its a super sized version of a Dumpster Diver. I'm over 200 lbs with a bad shoulder so its sized accordingly. This is my daily driver in average east coast surf up to head high. I ride narrower thinner boards when I go to Hatteras or if its bigger or hollow. I also ride a retro 6'6 Diamond Tail quad quite a bit when its real mushy.
I figured (on the west coast guy). So, I am glad you are chiming in as a shaper. You are right on with the subject "up to head high" as my interest. Also, well noted on the shoulder issue. As this is a middle age discussion, my shoulder, knee, back etc...is driving me to wider/thicker boards. Still charging but trying to be practical! If you don't mind me publicly picking your brain...which I appreciate. If I wanted a daily driver for me (5 11" and say 190lbs...to be conservative), and I wanted to have a 6 foot board would you: stay around 20" wide go to 2.5" thick stick with single concave with broad shoulders....and low to little rocker??? I like to surf rail to rail, big turns, if I throw the tail out the back I'm stoked, no aerial game...to speak of (really). Love to seek the barrel(l)...sorry could not help the extra LLLLLLL. Again, reality...I am 42 and want to have fun out there. Thanks CJ!
You only THINK you're a senior citizen, just wait til your mid sixties bub. 8', 9', 7'3", 6'8", and 6', depends upon the conditions.
If I was your age and size minus my shoulder issue I'd be riding this board in a 6'2. If you're fit and and surf regularly and if your waves have push a 6'0 would probably be fine in this shape. I should have mentioned my 6'6 pictured has a pretty flat rocker and concave to slight V in tail. Board performs great up to head high. If the waves are hollow this is not the board. Also keep in mind I ride this board in a 5mm wetsuit in the winter as well. Here is another oversize 6'6 board you might find me on. This one is a round tail. Outline is similar to a Lost MiniDriver but supersized to 6'6 and 2.75 thick.
Noted MD. I tried to emphasize mid life so I did not offend any of the real hard core...die hards (as my dad would say)! Mid Sixties is solid bro...or Sir.
yea...that one pictured here is similar to my 6 4" rounded pin, but is 2.25 too...and bit more rocker compared to my 5 11". I don't mind the low rocker on my smaller board in hollow waves...it kinda forces you to stall out. I have had a hard time going to a thicker board. After hearing what you guys are doing, I think my next groveler will be thicker. Good Stuff. How many boards have you shaped? How long? I would much prefer a convo like this on a new board versus trying to buy one off the rack!!!
Its just a hobby for me at this stage. Been making boards off and on since the late 80s. Probably around 25 now.
right on CJ. I have only been an observer in a couple of shaping bays...never had the nerve to try it myself. Probably very rewarding. Especially shaping boards for you kid.
