the mid-ocean garbage patch grows daily. current thoughts are that the clean-up is
too massive to undertake. consensus is that any changes to this issue must be effected on land.
anybody got any ideas? tin-foil hats, as always, are welcome.

I prefer a plastic hat, thank you very much.
Plastic clean up is NOT too massive. What is massive is the under achieving humanity for refusing to want to clean it up. Disposal INTO the ocean should be stopped first.
So, have you a XL size hat??

Beautiful bureaucracy. Until it's over, let's at least pick up our own trash. This includes cleaning up after your dog at the beach.

I'm not so sure about cleaning up after dogs at the beach. Dog crap is biodegradeable, and doesn't wind up out in the ocean choking and entangling marine life. And lots of times, people who clean up after their dogs just toss the plastic wrapped crap on the beach anyway.

A potentially bigger issue for us here are microplastics in local waters. It's a hot topic right now in science circles, and we really don't know the long term effects yet. There's a lot of info starting to pop up online, but it's a relatively new concern, and could be a big problem in the not so distant future.

Difficult to find a solution when we've not even clearly identified the problem. Still, things like recycling, replacing plastics with organics, minimizing packaging, etc... are always good ideas.

the way i see it is the problems is crystal clear and has 3 parts:

    1) human behavior
    2) midocean garbage patch
    3) a solution

Maybe your brain has evolved way beyond mine... My thought processes keep getting bogged down in the details.

A coworker sometimes mocks my aluminium water bottle, ergo one of my personal ways to not consume single use plastics. He doesn't realize rule of law is the only thing preventing a bludgeoning from said water bottle, and then a scalp harvest.

Do what you can personally, and be prepared to convert to the Ghost Dance when Ma wakes up.

Ya know, I forgot all about my aluminum bottle, got to find it and resume using it.

I have an aluminum water bottle, and cloth reusable shopping bags. And I don't litter unless it's biodegradable like an apple core or something. But unfortunately the good behavior of a few is undone by the bad behavior of the other 7,000,000,000.

There is nothing wrong with plastics in the ocean. I mean, what the hell is a guppie supposed to do?? Grab some planks of wood to make a place to live?? No. They use microplastics!!
