Hey SI. just curious how many, if any, of yall pay for beach access. Im 21, I've been surfing since I was 8 and have never paid once to get onto the beach. Not only that, I'm staunchly opposed to paying to go surf. Granted a good bit of getting around that comes from local knowledge, a bit of sweet talking at the toll booths and the overall aspect of being flat broke all the time. Just curious what you guys think.

In DE, pretty much all of the surfing beaches are state parks. Either you pay $3.00 daily or buy an annual pass for $30.00. The pass is the way to go, it gets you in all state parks and boat access.

I live in a very beach taxed state (NJ obviously) I've never paid for parking or a beach pass. If and when it comes down to it I run jump in the water and paddle til they cant figure out where or who I am. Down with the man...

Damn we have to pay for parking down here in NC at a lot of beaches but I'll be damned if I'm paying for access.

I feel ya NJ glide. I just tell the people that I'm not siting on the beach, just going right in the water and so I'm not paying. Works more often than youd think.

There should be free access to all public beaches and all beaches are public! I think I have an exit plan.

You can be creative with it. Have a non surfing friend distract the ticket checker while you go for it. Once I walked up to the closest checker to spring lake in belmar stopped right in front of him made eye contact for 30 seconds or so gave him a **** eating grin then just sprinted for water. Its so crowded there in summer I just disappeared amongst the other surfers.

I do whatever I can to avoid paying. The beach is public everywhere, but NJ municipalities commandeer it anyway. It's a real burn when I consider the amazing free beaches I've been to, and compare them to here.

There is one big badger void at the north end of town here, and the dune is covered in broken glass. Crazy amounts. I'm certain it's an intentional deterrent.

Where did you hear that? Or just saying they all should be

In most states private property can extend to either the mean high water or mean low water line. Since a lot of the beach is above the high and low tide lines, a lot of beaches are actually privately owned.

That's true, but a lot of towns/counties usually have public access laws too. They like to pretend they don't exist until you show that they do.

Im more floored by the ridiculous antiquated beach rules that towns enforce in the summer. "Surfing beaches" really piss me off. We are the experts, this ocean is OUR territory. As far as im concerned the bathers are secondary to us and need to stay out of our way. The lifeguards can separate them from us with their discretion. Instead they pack 40 people with sharp skegs in one 100 yard area. Absolute ****. **** them.

Anyway, I get a 12 dollar beach badge to Mantoloking, that's about it.

Exactly, most towns have gotten some sort of public access laws, or the Town owns the beach outright.

BUT there are a lot of people who believe that their is some kind of constitutional prohibition against private beach ownership, or that the public trust doctrine prevents it. My understanding is that neither one is true.

I agree. It's not just that, it's that our America will charge us to be on a beach, it's that our "free" America will charge us to be on a beach...

If tourists wanna pay $10 to go on the beach they can go right ahead.
