So, Im pretty new to surfing...coming up on my 1 year I went from never catching a single wave to actually catching waves and its such an amazing feeling...ive been hooked! But now with winter being so freaking brutal, I have only been out a few times to surf(though I have been consistently skimming this winter), but this past sunday I went out surfing and I realized that damn! Im getting so much better...but my endurance lacks bad! I was pooped after 30 mins...I used to go out for 4 hours at a time lol. Anyone have any workout suggestions or sites that I can go to that can really help my endurance/upper body strength?
Cardio for endurance. I have a stationary bike for that. Basic dumbbell exercises for strength, plus pushups, burpees, etc., is what I do.

Hey Maria, whats for dinner? Oh I kid. On days you don't surf do static stretching and cardio. On days you plan to surf do dynamic stretching.
Nothing prepares you for surfing better than surfing. Maybe you want to start lifting weights. If so contact forum member NJShredmachine when he makes his next appearance. If you live near Mass or RI look-up EasternMassSpicoli. He'll show the ropes. Do breathing exercises.
Maria don't be weirded out by this^ it's SI's official way of welcoming chicks on the forum, ha! Not sure if my two cents here are helpful because I don't really focus my workouts for surf training but my workouts consist on mainly cardio & circuit training w/ light weights for strength & endurance. Also I love pilates too! Like everyone says surfing & more water time is best so if you have access to a pool I'd take advantage of that. There has been past threads on here about swimming training / exercises that could be really helpful: PAST WORKOUT THREAD haha this^ I really need to start getting into yoga!
Caroline, you should go surfing with Seldom Seen. Actually, the best way to prepare for surfing is to smoke plenty of herb and drink beer at nights. Watch Fast Times at Ridgemont High to learn what surfing is all aboot. Real surfers don't exercise. Chris Ward don't exercise. Neither did Michael Peterson. David Eggers exercised and look what happened to him. Tom Curren used to have a drinking problem. Kelly has an ego problem. So try and have some problems. Problems and stupidity tend to yield better surfers.
Word, plus you chicks really need to start posting vids of said stretches and work outs so fellas can really chip in on what you're doing wrong vs what you should do more of. Key here is to be as liberal and uninhibited as possible. Remember that every dude here is a professional personal trainer with amazing six pack abs. So... Holla'atcho'koala
