They needed to get behind some Brazilian to help sell surf crap in an emerging surf culture and growing economy. I'd like to see how much sales of surf crap went up in Brazil now that they have their world champ. On a side note what was with Roxy advertising workout gear? Let's think of the logic behind this: surfer girls are fit and sexy, they need to exercise to be fit and sexy, they need clothes to exercise, they need Roxy crap if they buy clothes. In the end, they found a way to sell Roxy stuff to people in the Midwest. That's another thread probably. Back to Medina. In heats, he seems to be the most consistent Brazilian but for his strategy and not for his skill. I'll never forget when I lost a lot of respect for him after he blocked Carlos Munoz's takeoff at Trestles last year. Slater is big into heat strategy too but he still wows me on the reg. Honestly, it was boring to watch Medina surf last year. Like how people complain it's boring to watch Fanning surf. He never went to the air and not one of his waves sticks out in my mind from the whole season. Fanning makes boring look good at least but Medina keeps his back leg too stiff and it makes him look, idk, like a grom who can't control the board on a reentry so they stomp on the tail. IMO, if they needed a Brazilian champ there are way better Brazilians in terms of skill but without heat-win consistency. In Jadsen Andre's last heat at Haleiwa he did one of the craziest turns I've ever seen. I think he's made of rubber. Toledo is a beast but idk about him at legit Fiji, Tahiti, or Pipe. I thought Wiggolly Dantas won yesterday for sure. Dude has some power. On a good note, Medina seems to be a pretty humble guy. It's also nice to finally see a goofy take it too. Again, I think they made a choice about who would win like WWE or something. Let's face it, if the world title were about who is the best surfer jjf would win every year and Dane Reynolds never would have quit.
I'd love to see Carlos Munoz on tour. great style and attitude. Central American countries have an impressive surf culture there but the economies might not be big enough to justify giving someone the push like what happened with Brazil. Like the increase in sales would be negligible. They might devote their attention elsewhere. Any Chinese surfers making noise in the QS? You could just stamp the logos on the shirts there and not have to send them across an ocean.
the 9.5 was not cool, but was predictable. and yes his surfing is stiff,.. looking,.. lacking any style, IMO. Many other have said the same things. I Really think it is more of a sport to him. Is he having any fun? ..while in the comps, while out in the water? I hope so. Best job in the world if he can balance the two, winning and having fun while he is doing it. I would love to be a fan, but he really does not make it easy for many of us who have watched over the years. "Toledo is a beast" <<<I agree, really like watching him surf and i have always thought that De Souza was the most consistent for so many years until Medina blasted onto the seen. De Souza always seemed to match up well with Slater and go head to head with him in their heats, just like Bobby M.,... who, once again I wish was on tour, it is so silly why he is not on tour but anyway. Medina really could work on his style and flow, he would end up with a much more larger/supportive fan base, IMO.
sometimes strength in surfing is a regional thing. like aussies were so hot in the 80's. californians before 'em. also hawaiians...why not the brasileros?
Gabriel Medina sucks. Ya see, the ASP or whatever the heck it is now, knows the U.S. is a lost cause. But Brazil has potential. Having a brazzo as world champ(he won, right?) just solidifies Brazilian backing of pro surfing. No one in America cared aboot Kelly Slater. Most U.S. citizens, when axed aboot Kelly, would say, "Who's she?"
I did not watch the comp yet but I can already see the overscores. certain people always get overscored. medina parko and jjf only those 3 can get 10s for a 6pt ride.i remember last year or the year before parko was in the semis, got 2 little cover ups, each little barrel was worth a 3,he got a 10.then slater comes up,drops into a drainer, and gets a 9.5. what I hate about them overscoring jjf is he doesn't even have to show his true potential.he is well capable of getting his scores,he does not need help.every contest,he does 1 air and gets a 10.gets a millisecond barrel, comes out ,air reverse perfect 10.
i don't agree that they overscore jjf; at least not as much as parko and medina. i did think ezekiel lau should have had the score in that semi at the volcom pipe this year. and i think i know what air you're talking about too (inverted reverse at bells last year?). the goal of the judges should be for the person who surfed best to win and when they are clearly not doing that it pisses me off and makes me have to rant on online forums. giving a 10 will always be relative to the spot, the conditions, the difficulty of the maneuver, and how well everyone has been surfing. if they do something never before done in competition, they should take that into account too and jjf's style is so unique that he is always upping the ante. and sometimes they don't give a 10 when they should (jordy smith v. julian wilson at bells last year). i guess im saying that most of the time when jjf wins, i think he deserves it; moreso than when parko and medina do.
When the best in the world thinks that you are going to be the best in the world I take his word for it. Kelly has been saying for years that JJF and Medina are the best young guys and will be the best for a long time. And I don't think he cares if Brazil buys t-shirts.
