I may take the wife and kids down your way for easter. Hopefully some swell will be in the water when I go. Im goofy and always wanted to surf Reef Road.
idk, haven't been there in a long while, but seem to remember reef road is kinda hard to get to and even more difficult to find parking. It rarely breaks and, if there is any decent swell, place is packed. I also thought it was overated and a bit of a closeout...or maybe I just never caught it at it's best. I went with a guy who was born/grew up in Ft. Pierce and he managed to get us in the water...but, if I woulda just gone by myself, I probably woulda failed. maybe you can get sisurfdogg to hook you up
deal was really fun friday, pretty good size but breaking really soft at high tide. think im going back on Wednesday because it was fun friday... really empty when i was there, saw 3 other guys total and only worked next to 1 guy. thats why i love the winter
Probably know the guy from Ft. Pierce....small world. Go to cocoa beach or anywhere around there, they have the surf contest at the pier and there is plenty to do if the waves suck.
Yea... Easter weekend I think it's the 51st. anniversary of the Easter surf contest...and trust me the party rages all night, been there more than a few times..good time had by all. Make your reservations early, you want to be as close to the pier as possible...if there is drinking involved.
I remember once we were camping out at Peanut Island during Easter weekend, which is inside the Palm Beach Inlet - it has a bunker JFK used back during the Cuban Missile Crisis when he wintered down here. It monsooned overnight, the next morning was brisk and clear out of the northwest. My buddy had a little skif and we took it out the inlet and over to Reef Road, It was 12-15 foot faces. No rocks on the bottom, and a heavy offshore made the boat drift south and out to sea, and everytime one of us made a wave we had to paddle out to the boat and retrieve it, reanchor, and jump back out. After awhile we got tired, started arguing over who's turn it was to get the boat, it almost got blown too far to get, we called it a day. It could be firing this Easter, we are having one of those seasons.
Shot my mouth off before looking...they usually have the contest at the pier, they made a change to Lori Wilson Park a few miles south of the pier...it would still be fun but not as good as the pier...I hate change...lol.
i don't know what you guys are all talking about, and i don't want to read 5 pages back. anyways, Friday afternoon was kinda sh*tty in spring lake, but i managed a few fun ones before dark. it was cold. so cold. uncrowded, so heck, i'm not complaining.
So yesterday it was very chunky and onshore with an underlying swell head high plus, but the wind made it almost not worth it at most spots. I went to Jupiter Inlet jetty and it was chest to shoulder but only breaking properly right by the jetty, one main peak and a couple other peaks right south. Only two to three waves per set made each wave very contested with a tight crowd. I had to straighten out on my first wave to avoid running a guy over who was paddling back out through the pack. The second wave a guy tried to fade me and we collided. I kind of knew him from some bigger days up there, and we both looked at each other as we popped up from the tangle. He must of figured I would back off but I had the peak, was trying to establish my self, and went. He knew he messed up. I just shook my head. he asked if I was good. I said no worries. I decided to go a bit south, rather than hassle for the first peak. It was a good decision. I got lots of relatively uncontested waves that were fast, punchy and rippable. What was funny, was this guy, a kid about 20, was swimming around the lineup like a lost duck looking for his mom. He asked the guy next to me what board he was riding. "Have you seen a v3 lost?" He asked us. he said his board was stolen. someone asked him if his friends pranked him and he said no way, and kept bobbing around looking, like if some one was dumb enough to steal his board and paddle out at the very spot 5 minutes later. I brought my fish, and it caught waves early and hauled a$$ and was able to do a few nice hacks and tucked into a couple cover ups, lefts, but some right too, all about chest (to shoulder high on the peak) high. After awhile I had to leave to go help my wife, and in the parking lot was the kid with a board under his arm. I said "dude, you found your board!" He was all stoked. I asked him what happened, He said he checked the guard tower and the lifeguard had it. His friends must have pranked him.
Saturday morning dawned brightly for those who rise early. I didn't. I got-up at 8:00. The short drive to the beach was nerve-racking as I pondered how forceful and angry the waves would be. I took to the trail with trepidation - the anticipation of another glorious day in New Jersey making me scurry towards the beach. As I came over the dunes, my mouth dropped...it was 2-3' and semi-clean. Deep Atlantic swells were capping outside and then backing-off before slamming frightening death bubs over a shallow sandbar on the inside. I checked the conditions for twenty minutes, timing the sets and looking for the best paddle-out spot. My heart was in my throat as I hit the water. Words can not describe the feelings of that session. Thank you.
Props to the EC guys who are still getting sessions through the struggle. There's absolutely nothing to charge here this week up in EMass. Headed back west on Friday and I see myself staying there at least until April. Sessions are to be had on the daily there and I've really resigned myself of this EC winter. These SoFlo cats seem to have it all dialed in.
Ahh the stoke is fading.... Hey stay out of the water in Cullyfornia. Jesus said: If You Don't Live Here Don't Surf Here Yes, South Florida is the desired premier east coast locale. Heck with those swell-blocking islands.
Stoke's not fading at all Billy. Life has just been highly inconvenient in these parts for several weeks. I didn't have a driveway for three weeks and had to park a quarter mile away. The streets of this and surrounding towns turned to one ways if you could even get down them. Business has been quite difficult all winter in this region for everyone. Life's been on hold in several ways and it's hard to put surfing before sustenance and survival more than occasionally. Maybe you others are different, but for me, I can't get really stoked on much if my life lacks stability and function. When I've been out west this winter (frequently since October) I've been on a skate and/or surfboard 7 days a week. Only stoke will make that happen. Only stoke will make you travel across a country to seek recreation. The same will happen out east when roads are routinely passable once again. Back to the music. Let's keep hearing these score reports.
There's other things to do when the surf isn't working. I manage to keep busy. Even just sitting inside on a freezing day and practicing on a guitar is productive, in its own way. But I've been fortunate enough to get 2-3 days per week of surfing for a couple of months now.
Jeez, Spicoli do you live in Beacon Hill? That's awesome you guys re piled-under. I get perverse thrills from that. But I thought or fought you New Englanders could handle snow. Say what you will, but we have had bigger snowstorms than y'all down here in Jersey. Yeah, maybe not 10 3-28 inches in a row, but still. We can't handle snow down here. NOTE: For you southern guys, its is normal and necessary to act cool concerning snow... The New Englanders scoff at the Mid-Atlantic... The Great Lakers scoff at the New Engalnders Spicoli, I thought or fought you traveled for your "job" not recreation. Spicoli why you so guarded man. What the hell do you do for employment. Can I have a job. I'm smart and can do anything but Brewengineer science. Oh, I can't drive either. Well, I can but... I'd drive in other states than Jersey. I get locked-up if I get caught in Jersey. Elsewhere I'd just get a Driving With No License thang provided you supply a registered and insured car. I'll take the risk. Spicoli you ever hit Leo Carillo yet? You'll like that place.
Not in Beacon Hill. It's bad everywhere on the coast and the city still. Should be a major thaw tomorrow though with temps hitting 45. A lot more snow melts in a day at that than you'd think too, especially when there's so much to go. Then everyone will be bishing about the leaky roofs and the flooded basements and such. God help northeasterners without something to complain about. That state park looks great. Thanks for the suggestion. The photos online look a lot like a surf break I saw photos of last week, forget the name of it. Had some cave-looking structure like LC. I haven't been down to SoCal since December. Been feeling the Bay Area and CenCal lately.
Those damn Bahamas! The out islands fire square barrels on wicked shallow coral heads. Nothing but a 600 foot drop off / Marlin ledge to the east and Africa.
