Yes, I chatted with Machuca one year ago January during the Legends Contest @ Domes. Re-told some old stories that gave him some chuckling memories. Stephanie Cabrera was also there--what a babe still--another very down to earth person. You know of the Aviones Boys site on Facebook? An on-line history of PR surfing.
Nope. I am not a statue surfer I rapidly devolved from longboard to shortboard to "really short" board In our age group, Micco Godinez won last year. Not sure if he successfully defended this year... the waves were very funky I know that. Stopped in at last year's event for a few hours to chat it up with a few people -- I really don't know most of them as so many of the "legends" were San Juaneros and neglected many of the 1961-1972 westside folks. I have an oral interview with Leon Lowman that I need to transcribe and write-up and then seeing about having him instated as one of the "legends." The guy who was party to discovering and naming Middles is deserving!! Not to mention a real surfing talent during that time.
West Coast and West Coast Surf Club! Monty is a good guy but I doubt he has ever heard of that club The west was a completely different scene than San Juan in the '60s.
I was asked to participate but I declined. I return one time a year, I pick a "quiet week" to go when schools are in session and the tourist count is low--that never coincides with the Legends event. I am sure rod, we must have known each other or know of each other at some point. Nice conversing with you. I am aware of the Aviones boys site. But I have no interest in signing up on that.
