Nah man. The only Walter I know operates a fork lift at my night job. He talks to himself a lot. I like him.
As a kid, I envied the "surfer" lifestyle...living at the beach, being on top of every swell, having a handful of local breaks wired and making just enough money to support the freedom of the lifestyle. I always liked and needed money, so I worked more than the typical surfer, but worked in jobs that left me plenty of freedom so I wasn't stuck in an office with bosses breathing down my neck from 9-5 every day. Life's directions can take you through some unusual turns. Divorce, a second marriage, and a kid changes peoples perspectives and priorities. Many, like myself, wind up pursuing "careers" which take them far away from the coastal life. That's a serious tradeoff. But I did my time, tapped out, and cashed in. I am, in my own eyes, living the dream and enjoying every minute of it. It hurt for a long time, but in the end, it was worth the struggle. Do not cast aspersions at anyone who doesn't live within a stone's throw from the water. The surfer in Washington DC that drives 2-3 hours for some OCMD shorebreak is every bit a "surfer" as the fortunate few that grew up on the sand. They love it just as much, and not surfing hurts them just as much. Also, passing judgment on a "surfer" who likes to play baseball, lacrosse, motocross or rock climbing is dogmatic and selfish. The sign of a true man, indeed a true surfer as well, is the motivation and the ability to enjoy yourself in any number of pursuits. Calling somebody a kook because they love other pastimes is like calling Tudor a kook for enjoying Jiu Jitsu or calling Sunny Garcia a goon because he likes to motocross in his spare time.
Ah kid I like that little piece..but seriously though the jock personalities are at fault for where the surfing community is now..the same dudes slapping each other's asses at sporting events are now surfing..they have applied this same mentality to the surfing world..I mean look at competition surfing these days..controversy sells right..how many dudes got the limp effortless style these days..far and few..that's what got me stoked pre 2002..everything that was once cool..these same jocks made fun of us for It..surfing skateboarding rock n roll smoking weed..they would cruise down the streets in thier momz and dads bmws and shout retarded sheit out the window..now surfing is cool..skateboarding is cool..snowboarding is cool.. Now these same homers wanna be a part of everything that's "cool"..man that's so post 2004..everything that was cool died in 2004 you know.. In summation..I hate surf jocks..most of youz aren't even aware of this term..
when bruce and andy came into the limelight billabong tried to start a rivalry between them to boost sales for different boardshorts and other nonsense.its from an old surf video, mark healy was a grom in it,dont know how old he is now.bruce was saying they tried to do an interview like who surfs better and he responded ok who has a bigger house, whos car is cooler, who da phuck cares?thats how I feel about comparing surfers, especially brothers.u surf u surf,no need to up the antics.i skated almost my whole life, and don't have one photo or magazine or even a skateboard.do what makes u happy
Posers are lame though and If you only golf say two times a year, does that make you a golfer? Probably....just not a very good one. ...if you can find stoke in life grab hold of it and cherish it! Everybody has their own opinion. Like are you a flaming liberal or a democrat. Do you charge Chopes or Chest High beach breaks twice a year. Who cares what people think just enjoy life man...just enjoy the greatness of every freaking day!
Jawn nailed it with the "jock surfer" post. I too miss the effortless laid back style surfing used to have. Now everyone looks like they are posing for a cover shot or trying to look badass on their Homo Pro camera to post on instagay or ***book. I too remember when as a young skater/surfer/guitarist the "cool" kids who were footlball/basketball/soccer jocks would put us down for what we did or the punk music we liked instead of their top 40 pop crap. Now surfing is "cool" and every hollywood douche nozzle gets pics in People magazine of them surfing and talks about how "free" it makes them feel. And all the jocks go out and use analytical tools like a football coach would to increase their performance. I see guys taking video of their waves to analyze later like a QB watching his game tapes on Monday morn.
hahahaha i just posted on that thread. same thing: surfing was counter culture. skating was a crime. snowboarding was not allowed at many resorts. it was true total counter culture.
How do you decide who qualifies as a "surfer". Is it surf days per year? # of boards in quiver? Amount of maneuvers you can perform in the water? If someone asks me if I'm a surfer I say yes because I consider myself to be committed enough to be one. Like someone else said, don't need others for validation. Even if I don't "rip"
Bro, you don't surf if you've never had an introductory hello thread. OMG THATS THE ANSWER>>>>>>THATS THE ANSWER!!!! THAT IS WHAT DEFINES A SURFER. A HELLO THREAD AND SENIOR MEMBER STATUS. "bro, do you even post?"
Hey I just gotta ax one question..do you think some of youz would be here if surfing hadn't become so mainstream..don't worry dudes there were a lot of things that were "cool" pre-twenty twelve.. Ah youz guyz analize things to much sometimes.. Cheers it's Friday
****e! I posted a hello tread a few weeks ago, but no senior status, so I guess I'm out...damn you U2B
I would consider myself a surfer and I live 3hrs from my nearest break and have for 20 years now.....you got a problem with that yo? i did grow up a half a block away from the beach though from the late 80's to the mid 90's......its like being an alcoholic, even if you haven't drank for 20 years your still an alcoholic
Doeski brings up a valid point on the whole "jock surfer" issue. In high school, we had a couple of them and they were lame irritating poseurs. But, our State Champion football team also had a few really cool guys that surfed and also had really good bud. I guess my behavior towards jock surfers was mellowed by the second group mentioned. I mean, even Spicoli was accepted by the Jock crowd in "Fast Times", right? A kook is a kook not necessarily because of the crowd he tends to hang with, but his surf etiquette in and out of the water.
Bro Im sorry I missed it. Send me a link to your welcome thread and I will tell you to kill yourself. Or I could just tell you to kill yourself now. I mean, no offense---its nothing personal. Don't get me wrong, I definitely want you to do it, but its nothing personal.
