Humbling first day paddled fine was good to get wet practiced popping up in a deep gully board kept flip flopping right or left only made to a knee a few times oh well back to practicing on land for a while at least I look good doing it View attachment 15137
gotta ask, how's that spring suite holding up in Chucktown during early April? I'm thinking severe shrinkage.
Nice Nerfboard. You know that leash isn't worth a crap. I swapped my real board with one, and the waves were chested high. That day was the first time in years I had to swim in. The plastic bolt was the only thing attached to the leash.
When popping up get your hands up under your chest / rib area, don't grip the rails, put your hands flat on the deck with your fingers facing forward. Don't use your knees to get up like others have said. Explode out of your push up and get to your feet in one fluid motion. Keep practicing man, it'll click eventually.
Ahh k I was holding the rails... Spring suit is fine water temp 60-61. Feet/toes a little chilled but manageable...
I thought that might of been the case. That's a mistake I made early on and it causes the board to tip one way or the other, plus you don't get as much power out of your pop up. Think about how you do push ups on land and try to keep that in mind while in the water.
If you ride with the fins up, you can use them to guide you in a straight line towards the beach, Bwahaha J/K I use the rails when I pop, but then again, I've been surfing for a long time. I did however about a month ago use the center of the board for a pop and I liked it. I use both now
Haha jokes jokes eh...least the little dude is up..waves had some punch to them today for some reason and were close together think im gonna rewrite my schedule a bit train when it's flatter and more seconds apart til I get up
The pic was hard to see, but it looked kind of rough and breaking all over the place. That can make it difficult to line up and time
Frost, Surf every chance you can unless it's dangerous. Time in the water will make you a waterman. It's also time away from other less healthy "pursuites."
dude, I don't know where you're trying to learn, but I hope it's not Washout. I recommend the peaks near the pier.
Frost, Have you been able to pop in white water yet? No shame in starting out that way until you get the mechanics down. Get a big log, let a big one crash and get you moving, then try to pop. Get that down and get comfortable with the mechanics\foot position\etc. When you get bored with that go for catching a breaking wave. Whole different animal at that point. If you're not comfortable popping up in white water you're going to just have too much going on trying to catch a breaking wave. You don't need to be thinking about your pop up when you're doing that, it should be automatic. You'll have a ton of other things to think about trying to make a drop. And listen to what they say about hand position. Chicken wing arms, hands down by your ribs not shoulders. You're trying to get your hips off the board, not your chest. But make sure your chest is coming up first. Butt should never be higher than your head. Good luck man. Embrace the grind.
Oh I'll be in the water one way or another from here out..have some new bodyboards I wanna give a test/spin so going to alternate etc I'll work it out whatever fits the day /forecast etc or maybe do both on same day
