Hello all. Planning a surf trip to a destination I have yet traveled. I know there are many people here more experienced with these locales so I thought I would ask for feedback. Trip is tentatively scheduled for 2nd week of May. Just not sure which place I want to go. I honestly don't care that much as long as there is surf for an intermediate and fantastic food to refuel on. I would also like to hear about locals (guides), places to stay, places to surf and places to eat. I appreciate it. Thanks in advance. Sam
well, it's a good bet there won't be any waves here in May..it's always possible, but I wouldn't bet my vacation money on waves at that time of year.
In that timeframe your best hope of surf would be Barbados. Its also the most expensive of the three. Eleuthera is awesome even if there's no surf. If you go to Eleuthera pack as much food as you can in your luggage.
You want guaranteed surf, right? Cross all of those off your list and go to central America. You will be guaranteed surf.
Yeah definitely look at somewhere like Nicaragua or Panama with that time frame. I've been looking at a Martinique for a little anniversary get away which is near some of the places you named but not til late fall. You might want to push it out if you're dead set on going to any of the places you mentioned.
Thanks for the all the feedback. I was trying to get away with a short flight and then be in the water shortly there after. But sounds like I should tuck this (Caribbean) adventure away for another day. I spent a few months in CR before the wife/family/career thing happened (10 years ago) so I feel comfortable going back. I bet it has changed a quite a bit. It had already changed so much between multiple visits back then. Never been to Panama or Nica before. I guess I should add them to the potential list. Still would like to hit something in May.
Eleuthera is paradise compared to Puerto Rico. I haven't been to Barbados but a number of friends swear by it. Eleuthera has pretty good surf too. Awesome place. Off the radar and not crowded. The good surf is between Palmetto Point and Gregorytown. I would suggest having Gregorytown be your home base. The pic below is Surfers Beach just south of Gregorytown. This is one of the coolest places I've ever surfed. Its a fun left with a fast right up onto the reef. Probably the cleanest and clearest water you will ever surf in. The snorkeling around Gregorytown is some of the best you will ever find and the fishing is great too.
samwell..... no hello introduction thread?!? you just waltz into a forum and ask the wisdom of the group without saying, "hi my name is samwell" in an obligatory introductory thread? because my autocorrect wants to call you sawmill, you are forever sawmill to me. The Carribbean is great if you want to score and you have a high maintenacnce ol lady that wants to drink on the beach. Taking public transportation or a bro-brag surfari in CA is not most women's idea of a good time. Your options: sell the ***** to a cartel to offset the airline fees of hauling your sticks, or leave her at home.
