I know in advance this topic will not be well received. I'll start out by saying that I am by no means a beginner, and although I'll never be on the cover of a magazine, I can certainly ride a shortboard. I live in NY and our waves are rarely epic. This past weekend was waist-high, choppy, onshore and I borrowed a friend's Wavestorm, and I haven't had that much fun in a long time. A friend who is also a solid surfer took out another foamie and had a similar experience. I took one out today in decent chest high with crazy rip and again, had a blast and was able to paddle like a motorboat. It turns, snaps, holds an edge and catches waves in a way that can only be described as really unfair. Sure it's embarrassing, but do any of you ride foam regularly?
No, but I would def try one! You know, its about having fun! Last weekend my buddy took the fins off his board and we were trying to drop in and hold a line, didn't work to well, but it was fun!
Well, Misfit, having fun is what it is all aboot, right? So whatever craft does it for you.......it does it for you. You, being a misfit and all, shouldn't care how your board is received. Like, I'm the sponge. Yeah, I know sponging can look gay in certain waves of mushiness and stuff. But to me it feels better than stand-up surfing. Yeah, I know how weak and gay those who spin and flop around can appear. But I am the sponge, and throw more spray than most hard-board, stand-up kooks. I float, bust lips and escape gravity. It feels right, though I might not look as cool as Michael Dunphy and Seth Brody. I used to have it...until I turned 41.
I was doing an ocean swim just yesterday, and the waves were ankle slappers, and I said to my self, "This is perfect for a softboard. I wish I had one, so I could ride the dribble. Summer is coming." My friend's grom got a Beater Board and he loves it. He shapes his own shortboards, but still has no sense of shame, and shredded on it on waist to chest chop. If I found one for the right price (under $50) I would buy one.
I've seen foamies out in clean OH conditions here. I do assume the riders are beginner kooks though. Then again, people assume that about me when I'm lidding it. Never seen anybody really shred on a foamie. No crazy late drops or noserides, but that doesn't mean it's not happening somewhere. I'll get one for the family, but I'll stick with glass for myself.
Well, since I'm primarily a sponger, I've come to appreciate a board that doesn't hurt when it hits you. So last year when I decided to get a longboard for fooling around in small summer surf, I got a foamie. A 9' Greco. It's ridiculously easy to catch waves with it; the first time I took it out, I was recovering from a wretched summer cold, and I was up on my feet my third try.
Hellz yeah I'd ride a foamie in the right conditions. I've been dying to try out one of those Blackball Beater fishes in the local shorebreak.
You sound like rad-dad-brad such a tool barry foamies are fun in certain scenarios surf is mediocre, dont feel like 'ripping' get on a foamie for 80 bux and pull in then teach your kid on it I rode a foamie at 4 ft sunset, so much fun ______________ I really liked the turned down rails, so much performance //sarc
There's some interesting stand up foamies from Congo BB's, if one were inclined to support an EC based company... Those catch surf beaters look fun too.
I got a few of u ever wanna try it kidrock... I ride em prone but it welcome to borrow and shred on it...
I saw a guy riding a foamie at Puerto.....Actually he was SUPing a foamie.......actually he was SUPing a foamie with a lucha libre mask on......and getting crazy shacked. It was pretty insane and awesome
