the last time I bought a board and the fins were included. I've been jonesing for a new board and picked up a SUPERbrand Fling today. I got the board, 5 quality fins (quad and thruster set up), leash and 3 bars of wax for just a hair over 600 bucks. Granted I bought some clothing too as he knocked $35.00 off the board but still I feel like I actually wasn't screwed for a change. I don't think it was just this surf shop either as I believe all SUPERbrand boards include fins?? Getting 5 fins so I didn't have to decide was a really nice surprise. Can't wait to take it out! I have a feeling it's going to be a really fun summer board and what I really like about it is the board has a little more concave than your normal short summer board. I guess I would call it a progressive fish. I think it was nominated for surfboard of the year in 2014. I'm stoked.
After a little further examination it seems as if my fin set up is of the FCS snap on variety? I've never had those before. There's like a little orange button inside the fin box and it seems very straight forward putting them in but what's the trick to getting them out? They always offer to put your board together at the shop but I like doing it myself so we never got into that discussion. I didn't get any key or tool so I'm a little confused. Anybody got these?
I saw something with Sunny Garcia demonstrating them, looked like he just pulled them out. I'm still old school with the screw. LOL YouTube should have something
push them in, pull them out. just don't pull them out and push the front or back corner thru the glass
we should never have to pay extra for a set of fins with a new board. If the shaper put FCS in, give the customer some generic G5's. Firewire started this trend of no fins with boards i think. SUPER gives "premium" fins with their sticks and now we feel special.
yeah, why can't all gas be premium? Ok, I want fins with my boards, premium gas for my old beater, and chips with my burrito at Chipotle
Thanks for the info! I think I'm going to set it up as a quad just didn't want to put them in and not be able to get them out. I probably will youtube it first but was curious if y'all had any experience with them.
To remove the fins you almost have to punch them out. Make sure the box is free of sand when putting them in. Its a quick snap/open palm jab to get them out. You'll def want to ride that board as a quad. Did I ever mention how much I hate FCS2 fins. Oh yeah, every time it comes up. FUTURES ARE THE WAY. The only FCS fins not worth destroying are Simon Andersons. That is based entirely on my ignorant uneducated opinion. FCS2 boxes are not even coming with screws anymore. They want you to buy the $10 retail traditional fin conversion packet. I picked up and quickly traded a Fling. Its a FAST board. But it was an end-of-year deal and I bought the wrong size---way too big. Im sure its a great board if sized right. A buddy who is much taller tried it out and raved about it.
Check out the grub screw setup on the FCSII boxes. They all have one hole on each side of the box, which is the pattern on the center fin ONLY with the original FCS fins/boxes. However, the outside fins on FCS have the grub screw male/female parts on the same side. Essentially, the only thing keeping your the outside fins in the FCSII fin boxes with the conversion kit is pure, unadulterated pressure and a prayer. A cheap fix on the part of FCS and a way to cut corners on cost. I lost a PC7 due to this.
Talking FCS here only... Original FCS two-plug system: Worst in terms of strength and performance. Best in terms of fin choices. FCS Fusion boxes: Better in terms of strength, some increase in performance due to the box being anchored into the board more solidly (pre-glass system). Same great variety in fin choices. FCS II boxes: Best in terms of performance due to longer tabs and fit of fins, and the fact that it's a pre-glass system. Best in terms of tool-less fin changing and ease of use. Worst in terms of fin choices.
Still, nice to have an option with fins. Beats the old glasses in one's. Looks like a fun carving knife. May it give you many memorable rides!
