skip tamarindo, head south to santa terressa. Stay at the "tranquillo backpackers hostel" theres mad foreign girls and a good surf break out front and its only 13 a night. Tell them trevor says whatup. After that spend a few days in playa hermosa, try not to break your board on the shorepound doom and head straight south to pavones or matapalo at first signs of a strong south swell.

If you insist on sticking to the north end of the nicoya pennisula in tamarindo stay at either the "coral reef" surf hostel if you want to party, or if you want to surf the crowded yet sometimes perfect rivermouth stay at "tsunami surf hostel" tell omar at the front desk I say whatup and he might give you a discount. Thats all the info i can give while staying on the beaten path of well known spots. How much time do you have?

P.S. Pura vida man, stoaked for you hope you score. Just got back and I had some fun ones...

Dominical ( awesome hippy enclave in the Jungle - go a bit south of main beach to The Point for quality, non closed out surf - bring extra leashes) and Pavones (duh!).

Off the beaten path, but why travel for cattle spots?

I'm in tamarindo right now and it's nice if you like drinking imperial, being heckled in Spanish Vegas and walking miles for good waves. That stuff aside its got plenty to do, but as Trevor mentioned head south and enjoy

Guy shows up... No hello/introductory thread... Asking for stuff...

Hello friend. There is a brothel there called The Brown Flower. La Flor Moron. The girls all have cocks but it's a good time.

    Enjoy!

Santa Teresa has good breaks all along the beach...the main peak being just up from "DON JON's" place. Breaks most all tides hollowing out at low tide. Head south about 1 mile to Mal Pais and its a little softer wave than Santa Teresa. If you stay in tamarindo, just walk north and cross the river mouth and surf in Playa Grande...you can see it from tamarindo and it's a 20 minute walk but the wave is better due to the shape of the beach. Been traveling to Costa Rica for over 12 years twice a year. Been to pavones, dominical, boca barranca, Hermosa, the whole pacific cost. My place is in Jaco. You need any other adivice pm me....I love helping people out when it comes to my second home!

    Pura Vida Amigo!

peru has more surf, better breaks.
    line-ups frequently empty.

    no sayeth ye?
    try pasamayo or pacasmayo.

pasamayo is so empty thieves had time to steal ALL FOUR of my vw wheels.
and when the plane went down (ancon/AAirlines).....plenty of time for stiff robbery before
    the authorities showed up.

the rivermouth barrels fierce on the right swell. The only place that had a better barrel on the whole pacific coast i went was playa hermosa and playa dominical, maybe pavones but i don't consider that a wave just a natural wonder that really shouldnt be allowed to exist in the first place. I ****ing hate the rivermouth tho.

    dominical > hermosa

the river mouth at dominical can be super fun. if you can't get barreled here then you flat out suck

depends on the swell, but i feel like dominical is a combination of the wave at playa-carmen/santa terressa and hermosa. Punchy, but doesnt break right on the shore as much as hermosa, a little more forgiving and some long sections. I hear the bars change the break in the rainy season tho.

That rivermouth is a monster, when that first big south swell hit last month everywhere but the point and the rivermouth were closed out. The point was like head high and clean and the river mouth was pushing double overhead. Some of the craziest rides of my life there, backdooring that occasional wideswinging close out barrel....or not and getting raped.

domincal pissed me off tho once that gay ass "envision fest" got out and all the hippies started camping on the beach. Almost got arrested for smokeing a joint on the beach with an israeli because of all the americanized cops they sent in 4 times a day to clean up the beach. Hippies are like IPA's, one or two are fine but more then that in one sitting and i just get a headache.

    you make me laugh.
    short answer is yes.

    oz - my car
peru - anything not nailed down
    france - my (only) board
    p-rico - 3x car windows
    a.c. - 4x
    bahamas - a girlfriend
    nic - my land.

i just figured that if i had it to give-up; ain't it great being merican.

Well, at least you can say you've traveled! Only place (knock on wood) I've had my car broken into was Torrey Pines, CA while I was surfing. All they stole was my wallet, but that still sucked!

    i'm open to suggestions.
i think, though, in my life more things have gone right than wrong.
(now watch a piano fall on my head for saying that).
