I'd say the shark population is probably too healthy as far as hoping to get people back into the waters. 13 yo kid. slated to be a future pro. http://www.france24.com/en/20150412-shark-kills-13-year-old-off-france-reunion-island/
It's the way I want to go out. If I die out of the water, I told my wife to get my carcass on a boat, head out 2 miles and start chumming. She said it was probably against the law. THEN I suggested giving me a Viking Funeral, nope. Then I said to get a big aquarium, put me in it and have mourners throw in hungry blue fish. Looks like I'm just gpoing to get dirt thrown in my face.
Yeah I totally agree... but I think there is something else. something else in that area must have changed to bring in so many territorial sharks. I'm guess the attacks are mostly bulls. I remember hearing another story about bulls attacking swimmers in some area I cant recall the name of the place... but was due to industry taking over a section of water where bull sharks would give birth, forcing them to a new area which they never had been before, and just happened to be populated by swimmers and surfers. But its def time to cull. No hunting is just as harmful as over fishing.
Tigers and bulls have been responsible for the attacks. They culled 45 tigers and 45 bulls last year, but I guess it didn't work. They say there's 2 big reasons for the attacks. There's a 19 mile reserve on the west coast that cannot be fished. There's a ton of fish there, so the sharks moved in to feed on them. And there are fish farms on the west coast as well. So there's a ton of food, right on the beach, for the sharks.
Yes but based on alot of theories you hear from conservationists and fisheries managers, a good population of fish should actually prevent attacks on humans. There are theories, such as the increase in GW attacks in West Oz, that lack of food and overfishing contributes to the sharks trying to find other prey, such as humans. These bull sharks in Reunion seem to be onto something else though. I think they have actually learned that humans may be an easy food source. This is very troubling. If those attacks were happening in the US say in NJ or Florida there would be an all our war on sharks here. Poor kid, RIP
In theory there should be less attacks with more food, but when they are supplying a food source in the same area that people are there will be more encounters. Which will equal more attacks. With tiger sharks and large bull sharks the wounds are going to be severe.
also sheds light on one of our darker behaviors with respect to children and careers; i only mean those who would hijack a childhood as opposed to taking their kid surfing.
Our three favorite tagged great white ladies, Mary Lee, Katharine and Genie are all pinging off the Carolina coasts this week. Good thing they have ALL the great whites tagged so we know when it's safe! (insert sarcastic emoticon here)
That's a great point. We are very lucky to be able to track all he white sharks here on the east coast. As long as you check Ocearch you will know where every white is and can surf knowing you are safe.
