Hello Bo's. What fins do you think I should go with? I have a 2 + 1 option and a quad for this board. It's about 5'11" X 23 X 3 or so. It's a tightened up at the nose and tail but basically a mini-simmons idea. Slight concave, flat and a V out the back. Significantly lighter than my other attempts but it isn't glassed yet. I think it looked the prettiest before I put the top deck on.
Quads are very very very specific on their placement. You can easily make that thing into a turd if you do not get the spacing right. Your best bet is to find something similar on tail dimensions and measure out the spacing and replicate, otherwise just stick with a standard 3 fin, it's a lot more forgiving.
Holy sheep $hit, that is badass, great friggin job!!!!!!!!!!!! I like the quad set up. Did you create the design emblem? Man, that is awesome Clem! I'll beat everyone to it... Are you selling them for $400,000.00? HA HA
I'm leaning quad too. Gonna stick with the Mckee system, http://www.mckeesurf.com/?page_id=267 . It's a good guide.
Yeah, I designed it but I'm sure it's been done a time or two before.... Think football teams from Pennsylvania that don't fly. For my SI Fam, $399,999.89! This week only!
Fin box is the next step. I have a center fin box I thought about installing but talked myself out of it. I don't have any router templates and unsure about how to install the fin box securely and not too heavy. I got creative with the vent hole which I imagine would be significantly harder than a fin box.
Same as yours, to let air out. Since it is hollow the air can expand or contract with temp variations. The plug is goretex so it can "breathe". The first one I made I used copper tubing and there was definitely some pressure in there when I removed the plug. If it was solid it would probably be fine under most circumstances but left out in the sun on a hot day would probably make it pop.
Wow, another Sweller simply killing it with the hands. Props, Clemmy. Zeroevol, good call. Just seeing this tread now, but something would've felt suspect if you hadn't.
I agree with the boxes. A stick like that could be a dog but if you can experiment with different fins you could find the magic combination. I love the quad tc-aqualines in a wide board like that.
I agree with the boxes too. Just never done them before and the fact that the board is hollow makes it a bit more difficult. Glass-ons by a pro are fine, glass-ons by me and a fin that I've foiled leave a lot of room for error. It's fun to experiment and the fins that I foil are a fraction of the price but I know I'm missing on some performance factors. With that being said, I'm going with the 2 + 1. I've ridden a lot of wide quads and I'm hoping the vee and a center fin will add a little pivot point to the board. This pic shows a little vee.
quad over tri for that shape, IMO. I the rears should be closer to the rails than where you have them in that shot, unless you want a stiffer feel turning. Whith that wide rail, i think the rears will do you more good out closer to the rail, maybe set in 1/4" further from the rail than the front fins.
