dude, isn't that a '71 Dormobile? You make me sick. That's my current dream ride. Also a big fan of Adventurewagons. Out here though, I'd probably go with the tin top Westy because of all the weather. Having a hard time convincing the spouse why I should buy one while continuing to hold on to the '88 Carrera while on a fixed income. Well hell, I guess I could always go back to work..............ummm, NAH.
I had a '64 VW Van for 7 years...which pretty much led to my decision to buy the '69 Bronco. Couldn't cook, sleep or change wetsuits in the Bronco. But, I also got sick of climbing the hill out of TJ to Mexico 1 in 2nd gear at 20 MPH. The tradeoff was tough.
Alright kidrock, found the perfect one for you: http://bringatrailer.com/2015/04/30/porsche-911e-power-1980-volkswagen-vanagon-westfalia/ Needs a little work, though.
Thanks sbx, I've seen a few of these but this is the first time I've seen a Vanagon with a carbureted 2.2 litre. If I were going to do an air-cooled swap, the 3.2 litre from the 84-89 Carrera's are probably the best way to go. Electronic ignition, fuel injection and 230 horsepower makes it a "plug and play" affair. Some of the older Porsche stuff like MFI, CIS and dual carburation are just too finicky for my limited wrenching skills. The Subaru swaps are def cool and way more common. I try to stay away from Frankencars as much as possible though. But man, can you imagine the power upgrade from those old 80-something horsepower stock VW motors? Sure would make a huge improvement.
The 72 to 79 buses were powered by Porsche 914 engines...Actually the Porsche 914s were powered by 72 to 79 VW bus engines is much closer to the truth. Kid, That 71 "dormy" is actually a very rare Westfalia. It's an "Oslo edition," Maybe three left in the states. I had offers from Ireland. It was rough, but a runner. I hear it's somewhere in the Outer Banks. Now Seafoam Green.
Yeah, kind of an interesting history. The 914's that were sold in Europe were badged as both Porsche and VW...only the U.S. versions were sold exclusively as "Porsche". But yes, those motors were VW...and not very powerful either...I'm thinking in the neighborhood of 80 horsepower? But the change over from reduction gear transaxles to the IRS helped the later versions of the buses immensely. That Dormy deserves a full resto. I hate to think that poor van is rusting on the beach with a Maaco re-spray. But for every one that dies, it just makes the survivors that much more valuable.

Got my soft top for my 4Runner. Going to do the install over the next couple of days, then will post new pics. I had a chance to buy a double cab synchro about 5 years ago... THAT would have been a surf vehicle...
The best surf vehicles all have two wheels and pedals. I feel bad for anyone who lives so far from the surf that they require motorized transportation.
I walk to the beach. I also have a bike with carver racks. We at CB are lucky enough to have a north end and a south end of an island that allows for 4 wheel drive access to find suite surf, camping and fishing. A four wheel drive lets me bring multiple boards, wahines, hindu models, bench presses, and coolers full of beers to primo surf locations!
taking my drivers test tomorrow. been practicing parallel parking for the last two and a half hours. kinda in panic mode but i should be able to pull it off. i'll be whippin in my '06 escape
I had a'72 one like that without the rag top and with sectional roll open window on the back sides. Had a bed in the back, and blue shag carpet on the floor between the bed and front seats.Perfect for the OBX back in the day.
