He's like 3rd gen. Chummer and Murph the Surf and Roy Grubber and **** Catri were some of the first (Catri came down from Jerzy I think). They were some of the original Florida beach boyz. 2nd gen is Mike Tabling, Jeff Crawfish, Mike Porpoise, Greg Luhr, Yancy Spencer. Ron Heavyside Sr. of Nomad, most of those guys were smuggler/shaper/surfer/promoter types.
Pro surfing didn't matter nor really exist until the 1980's. Actually 1985 began the real world of pro surfing with the Allentown event. All those 1st and 2nd generation you mentioned didn't even wear TFL Power Gloves, so the professionalism is questionable. Thank you. Nah, I don't know I just never think of Florida or the east being relevant in the pro world until the 80's.
When Jeff Crawford won the Pipe masters in 1975, that, in the minds of Florida surfers, put us on the map. Here is an excerpt from Transworld Surf- These days, the 52 year old is still charging Third Reef Pipe with the best of them and has been recently experimenting with outer reef tow-in surfing at a big-wave spot called Illusions. Jeff’s vast surf knowledge has transferred over into his fifteen-year-old son, Adam, as he has been making a name for himself among the new pack of young Hawai’ian rippers like Mason Ho and the Florence brothers. When asked if he’ll ever stop charging big waves, Jeff’s response summed everything up quite nicely: “I surfed with Peter Cole the other day, and he’s like twenty years older than me-there ain’t no reason to quit.”-Aaron Schmidt The article is 10 years old.
damn. powergloves, zinka, and bodyglove neoprene shorts on my Hot Stuff Kong pro model..sniff....memories
Stussy pork pie hat, jams, and those stupid hats with the two long back panels. Could not have been any cooler. Had the APE gloves. They killed your lats. Especially if you were a scrawny 12 year old.
This is how NH surfers welcome uninvited "guests"!! It is Biblical in origins and will continue forever. So, if you want to come surf in NH, wear an armored suit, or, change the plates on your car to be NH plates. They are watching.....
