If I see any of you at my break, I'm waxing your windshield and sticking a traction pad on every car window. Locals only YEEEEEEWWWWWWWW!!!!!
lolz Monday was chill. everybody in the water was cool but we know the touron crush is coming. This is when it becomes every man for himself at certain breaks. If you ain't up to it don't complain just find somewhere else to go. #7 and #8 should be posted at every walk over.
I can understand you like the concept of localism...but when is the last time you slashed a tire, broke off fins...serious question.
NW SQUID, my God you're handsome. Man, if Seaside was a right, I'd ax for an application for local status. Hey, I love llamas. I heard that they didn't like some new dude who moved to the area and was in the process of building a house. The locals there put fish inside the walls of the house. Man, people do such dinky things, huh? Trev needs to teach them aboot karma. But that's just not right. Why do some clowns from the NW get such a spot. They can't even surf. There's no Rob Kelly's or Ben Gravy's in Oregon or Washington. And we are all stuck here with friggin North St and 1st St's(VA Beach, KDH OCNJ) and jetties and pipes and piers. Where's our friggin points? Why do they get them?
I disagree, while it can certainly turn into a sh*t show and people dropping in with no regard, if you are savy or aggressive enough you can get yours. I know I do...
Or he's old. Alot of surfers who have been around have seen this stuff in real localized spots, and they didn't go running to the cops when it happened to them. Nowadays you give someone the stinkeye and they sue you for hurt feelings
Personally I'd like to see more localism. People today think they can show up and back paddle you or paddle out right to the peak when they've never seen been to a spot. I don't care if it's some heavy secret spot or local jetty, have some respect for the guys that are there all the time and grew up there. Surf etiquette is much more than not dropping in on people. Don't back paddle. Don't paddle right to the peak when you first get out Give a nod and acknowledge some of the regulars. You are at the bottom of the totem pole Respect gets respect. You will get your waves if you ease into it. If not, you won't get respect. If you do any of this stuff you have a right to get dropped in on, catch a bad attitude or worse.
What is missing is an overall lack of respect for ANYONE in the water that has put in their time and have a level of ability that is generally better than the masses of idiots that populate most breaks in the Summer/early Fall. A sense of entitlement has developed in this Country everywhere and it has filtered out into the surf breaks. Anyone on this forum who has joined recently should look up the 'Nobody Owes You Anything' thread. NOYA
Dudes, Jersey locals are nothing. It's the non-surfers that you have to worry aboot. Mitchell, Holyoke? 8th St OC ? God I hope you didn't enter North Jersey. Besides some weird occurrences, typically years and years ago, the east coast don't really have no localism. Yeah, some bearded clowns in Rhode Island ain't localism. Plus, they don't live on Ruggles avenue anyway. Imagine getting vibed by an Astor descendent. Now, SISurfingDog used to hassle people at The Lake Worth Pier in the 70's, but he feels bad aboot that nowadays. Hey, some people in this here life, only have their area code and their favorite jetty.... Ha, pretty stupid claiming a jetty that dishes out 0-5 foot closeouts 360 days a year, right?
I like to be respectfully aggressive in any lineup. Otherwise, you should not paddle out. There are places that you will not catch waves at regardless of your talent. With that being said, there are may breaks where talent would rule but you should still be respectful to the locals. I would probably drop in on the OP regardless
Right. I'm not talking aboot localism, just an overall lack of respect and lack of concern for the safety of others in the water. You could be from Pittsburgh but if you put in your time in the water and know what you are doing, then you are OK by me. Ever been to Pittsburgh? It's weird. One minute your in the city, the next you're surrounded by hillbillies.
"Respectfully Aggressive," now there's a term. I kind of like that phrase. May I use it? Giving you full credit of course, Mr JayD.....
Bingo. I'm not local enough to regulate anywhere, nor do I care enough to put my own neck on the line. I've only been in one "fight" when I was younger and dumber. That doesn't mean I can't benefit from the guys who do regulate, and like what they do, and the result; yupsters get scared off. The breaks where I walk or bike in, I paddle straight up top and give as good as I get. If I drive in--at some spots--I park far away, keep the cell phone locked away, and start at the bottom and work my way up top. I didn't go b*tching about it on the internet, or pen some wimpy passive-aggressive "open letter" when I got my windows waxed. I never call the cops if I get regulated. I guess it's never happened to some people on here. It's not like you're getting dragged into a back alley, beaten and robbed between million-dollar beach houses. If you manage to draw the attention and ire of the local crew, some dude's gonna stop you and say "Not today brah." He's gonna be backed up by a couple other guys. You can be a whiny b*tch about it and throw a tantrum or (foolishly) throw down, or you can be smart about it and find a way to sneak in. Beamer brahs get scared for their fancy faces, cell phones and fancy cars, stay away, and then help us all about by telling about how localized that spot is, and how it's not that good anyway. Of course, there's almost no localism any more. Just old legacies and fading reputations. Sadly, one of the spots that got name dropped in this thread has pretty much zero localism these days. I still hide my cell when I'm 10 minutes out, and I never park in the lot by force of habit, but I've seen plenty of yuppies in the parking lot, calling up their bros without a care in the world. Be honest, who among you--even if you don't want to deal with some investment banker calling the cops on you, yourself--wouldn't grin to see some burnout snatch that iphone8 and smash it on the jetty?
Assuming this is a real question, that depends. You gotta feel things out a bit, don't hog waves, etc. If you're a donkey, and you don't know right from wrong, just quit. Most of the time, paddling right to the peak is the courteous way to do it, to keep out of people's way. Now if you paddle right to the peak, sit on top of it, and go for every wave, you are indeed an A-Hulio and will get dropped in on eventually. A lot of times where I tend to surf, sitting right on top of the "peak" isn't where the best waves come through anyway. Sitting a little further towards the middle and waiting for good waves to wrap around the jetty is usually my call. It also offers-up the option to surf the left on a South swell, or a right on a NE swell. Forget about paddle battling for waves, that's retarded.
