yeh, but I was too late last year. I'm on it this year. Already got squash on the vine. Do have some signs of powdery mildew I noticed this morning. I generally check out Growing your Greens with John Koeller? (sp?) on youtube for info on gardening. Thanks any hows.
Some people seem to believe that everything at the grocery store is GMO. There are only a handful of GMO fruits and vegetables in production, and they aren't the most commonly eaten ones. Nearly all GMO food production is corn, soybeans, and canola.
I've always been too lazy to do it, myself. If you're growing pumpkin types in the future, you might want to look into varieties that used to be in the mixta species (I think it has a different name now). They have solid (not hollow) vines and are immune to borers.
Could we all agree, based on selective breeding, that raddabrad is genetically modified?? Sorry, rad, I couldn't let that one by......
I use spinosad on my veggies. I know there are risks, but I don't use much. It is organic, but that isn't why I use it. I use it because it kills the sh1t out of mites.
The safety of GMO has been studied by many different independent organizations. However, I agree with buying small and local. I am a big fan of our farmers market here. Those John's Island and Wadamalaw farms deserve our money. Good people.
Most of the work was the 1rst year.I had to take out a tree 4 or 5 years ago so the back yard was all tore up. I Had a time tilling due to the root system. Mixed in a bunch of compost and planted a sh*t pot full of veggies. Some did well some did not. Tomatoes, green beans, cukes squash, zukes, onions, garlic, lettuces, kale grow with little effort here. Always have had a lot of herbs since they are easy to grow for the most part. Now I prep in Jan. or Feb. and it's pretty easy. I really enjoy walking out and picking something for dinner.
Oh, I meant to lazy to wrap the squash! I used to run a small farm operation, now we just have a 4x8 bed in the garden down the street!
GMO is a stupid label that most scientist think is silly. I am not right wing. Actually, I am much more on the left, and actually consider myself to be a bit of an environmentalist (anti off-shore drilling, reduction in pollution, and reduction of energy needs, that is what I am all about). One of the main reason I am in the field I am in, is because I wanted to develop next gen engines to increase fuel economy and clean up emissions. The fact remains that older methods of genetic modification can and do end with dangerous unknowns. I post this chart every time the topic comes up. Please, read it and let it sink in. We have been genetically modifying organisms for centuries. Only recently could we do it with a little precision.
You are completely scientifically ignorant. What data or information have you provided here, other than ad-hominem? Honestly, man. We know you love conspiracy theories, and I am guessing you probably align to a lot of what is said on Natural News. If you can't add content, why post?
Dude, I have made a couple of substantive posts in this thread. Go back and read and try to refute what I've said. You seem to have fun playing the scientist on a surf forum, but I think you genuinely are not that familiar with these issues, this was evident in that other thread where you claimed GMO food could be organic. That issue was very publicly debated a few years back, and the fact that you weren't familiar with that debate show me that you maybe don't have the expertise you purport to.
I am very familiar with toxicology (3 years in chemical development), not with the political debate on GMO. I don't give a sh1t about politics. And because I make one mistake doesn't mean the other data I have posted is wrong. You made only one post that meant anything in the whole thread (towards the debate we were having. I don't care how you garden). "There isn't strong evidence that GMO crops produce consistently larger yields." It isn't just about crop yields. If that is your only point, you haven't been keeping up with the discussion. To just label me a troll shows that you are not capable of debating the issue. I don't think you want to debate. You don't like anyone that doesn't subscribe to your brand of woo.
That post directly addressed a previous post stating that GMO food would be needed to feed a growing population, which yes, is about yield. I also posted that, contrary to the impression that some people have, their are only a handful of GMO vegetables and fruits on the market. Most GMO food production is in corn and soybeans, a good bit of it ending up in food that nobody can say is that good for you. Your attempt to redefine the term GMO to include all of agriculture can't be sincere. I mean, "GMO" even appears in the chart you posted.
With parenthesis. The chart was created to point out the amount of gene changes happen in each genetic modification process. I know that transgenics/cisgenic only get the GMO label, but that doesn't mean I (or geneticists) agree with the label. It is completely ignorant to deny that most crops in the world are recklessly genetically modified.
In the near future there will be no ability to be GMO free. Good or bad. Corn, soybeans and cotton are in just about everything we eat. Cross pollination is and will continue to happen as it always has. Good or bad only time will tell.
Ok, guys, let's look at it this way- GMO or not, I bet none of us on this thread is skinny, undernourished, or nutritionally deficient. That means that no matter what the labels say or do not say, we get good food here in the USA and we should consider ourselves lucky to be fed with whatever we are eating. I would not want to be in Ethiopia right now, or ever for that matter. Agree??
Ive said it before and say it again here. GMO will be a trivial thing when Google AI is rolled out. And Barry, agree.
