Grew up as a year round swimmer and it would happen a lot in practice and it still happens from time to time surfing. Everyone has the right suggestions above. Water, bananas, Gatorade. Try peanut butter or salty peanuts too. When it happens to me these days I paddle deep and chill out for a few sets. Stretching never helped as a competitive swimmer but, committing to total relaxation would work.

So, you would just paddle outside the line up and have a yoga zen session and that worked??? I was always taught to massage the muscle lightly and stretch it and that technique has always worked for me.

I'd trust you if you weren't Ramsey, the bastard of Lord Bolton, and current heir of Winterfell.

and roll out prior to (like the night before) and after each session. they massage muscles as well as get blood flowing to the area you roll to help remove stuff like lactic acid. i also pop a tennis ball under my calf (or hamstring) and move it around lightly.

my biggest issue is my hip flexors...they get stiff and sore after more than two hours....

I used to jump in and paddle out with out stretching but as I'm getting older I can tell you this is a recipe for injury. You can't strecth enough. Keep hydrated, eat your veggies and bananas. I swear when I juice beets, carrots ,green apple and ginger everyday I feel like f*cking superman. It's an acquired taste for sure. PS It taste like ditch water the first few times but damn it's good for what ails ya. If you juice something and it taste bad just add lemon and it will be okay. And stay away from vodka or maybe that's just me.the cure does suck.

Yup, aging does suck as it does take a toll on all body parts.
Glucosamine--I confess to know little, nay, nothing, about it. OIf all the fields I worked in, bones and joints is where I spent the least amount of time. But there have been time I wished I had spent a lot of time there, due to aging.
If you want to really look into it, google PubMed--it is the best place to get study abstracts to inform yourself on anything medical. It is the search site for the National Library of Medicine.
Good luck; hope you find good info there.

I stretch and hydrate, as well as eating bananas, but it seems like it mostly happens with cold water and restricted movement, like a short flat spell in the session.

I can never go surfing in the morning without coffee but it always screws me a half hour into my session when I'm sucking wind and end up cramping in the beginning of the session.

Toe cramps are the worst. I only get them when the water is cold.

I like "LOVE HOLE" for a band name.

I can't change the station fast enough if the aforemention Cure song comes on.
