Just got my new summer quiver. The UPS guy quickly propped the box up on the outside of the van while he ran back in to do something else. From my window, I watched in horror as the box slowly slid off the van and slammed onto the street...ugh. Fortunately, the boards are epoxy and Hydroflex padded the fudge out of them, so they look o.k. Anyway, I custom ordered a Mutant and a Modern 80's...four months ago!!!! Came with stock Thermotech (plastic) fins and a bunch of Hydroflex stickers. Great looking boards, but I'm annoyed Hydroflex didn't exactly follow the few detail choices they asked me to make. They said it was a "mistake", but I'm leaning toward someone in production took creative license and decided swapping my color choices would look better (I asked for orange accents on the Mutant and green on the Modern 80's)...then they airbrushed the Modern 80's rails orange (I didn't ask for paint. Yeah, it looks good...until you fix a ding on it). On the optimistic side, they usually charge $50 for airbrush (didn't charge me, of course) and I didn't ask for the carbon tail patch, either (no charge). Mutant: Modern 80's: Mock-ups I sent them 4 months ago: If interested in Hydroflex, you might want to buy one off the rack...unless you can't find a must-have specific model (my case). That way you don't have to wait 4 months and you know exactly what it's going to look like from the start.
only 2 boards...pics are top and bottom of each. 3D epoxy glass supposedly lasts over twice as long as polyester, so ends up being less exp than standard boards in the long run. Mod 80s dims are 6'0" x 19 3/4" x 2 3/16". Mutant dims are 5'9" x 20 3/8" x 2 3/8". Vol aren't listed, but based on stock models, these should hover around the 32-34 Liter range.
How much are they per board? My shaper charges me around $350-400 but they are not epoxy so these may be more. At $400 x 4 that's only $1,600 for a whole quiver. Not bad in my book. Hell my guitar and amp cost roughly that much for each then about $700 worth of effects pedals, cables, Etc. Now my wife thinks surfing is a much cheaper hobby for me.
but you can sneak in a new pedal or two without her noticing... I used to be able to stack the rack with new boards. One day she just started noticing and the party was over.
rcarter don't mean to derail tread but have you checked out (BYOC) Build Your Own Clone website? Way cool for those with effect pedal addiction.
Very true. I have even snuck in a guitar or two. Yeah BYOC is very cool. I had their large beaver fuzz pedal. It was really cool. I've gotten into hand made boutique pedals lately and even though I'm not using many they have been running $200+ each. The one I am waiting on now (Retroman Dum-Box) is $315 but it's hand built and replaced 2 or 3 of my pedals I had on the board.
Sweet boards man Im going for a 5'6' mutant next, I heard really good things about it great summer stick.
yeah, one of the features that drew me to it is the flipped up nose with rolled edges (hard to find that on a dedicated groveler)...should come in handy on jacked up little windswells. The Mush Machine was another option, but I figured my local spot is actually better suited to the Mutant.
They do look sweet. I actually like the color scheme they did (no offense) and the orange rails look sick!
Those are very nice. Carter 400 seems like a great price on a custom. My last one was about 780 but i got a few extras like heavier cloth and a couple of other things.
My shaper is one of my best friends since Jr High and a groomsman at my wedding. He charges me for the blank and I pay him $100 for his time so that totals around $180 or so. He sends them to a local guy for glassing and I pay that charge which is usually around $200-$225. It's pure luck that such a good friend of mine is a shaper so I know that what I pay is lower than what a usual custom would be.
I have 2 friends that are shapers whose boards I really like--Gordon and Smith. But they charge me up the wazoo for great boards!! hahahaha!!
