Just finished a yoga class and did this amazing and simple stretch for paddling. place a yoga block right under your shoulder blades (not above or below) and lie back. Make a goal post shape with your arms and just let your head hang back. If that bothers your neck, than interlace your fingers and place at the base of your head and support it. That should relieve the neck. You'll get a nice opening through the chest and inner shoulders.
Thanks Juliaep. As someone with a permanently jacked up shoulder I'm always looking for new ways to stretch it out. You can also sit with you back against a wall and to the victory move slowly raising your arms over your head and trying to keep them as far back as possible.
The best exercise for paddling is paddling. I go 3x a week for a two mile paddle on my longboard, prone, paddling. Not a SUP. Also, I work with latex bands to work all my rotator muscles in shoulders--find that very helpful. Been doing all of this for many years. Works for me. I will try that yoga stretch you describe Juliaep. Thanks for that.
Thanks for the info juliaep. The past year has been my worst for injuries. Definately got to stretch more. I keep forgetting I'm not 16 anymore.
I was thinking of doing some paddling around with my longboard, too, just for exercise and something to do in the ocean. It's not like there's any waves to catch with the thing, and this way, at least I can get some use out of it. I wonder if a foam roller would work for that shoulder stretch?
Here is a couple links someone on here told me about: www.surftrainingsuccess.com and www.surfstrengthcoach.com Go to the shoulder section. The stretches and the exercises really helped me rehab from a rotator cuff tear. Thanks Juliaep for the stretch. I try to do the "fish" asana after shoulder stands as a counter stretch. I'll try that one then.
The paddling helps me physically, but, more importantly, mentally as well. Here in New Hampshire, on a flat day, paddling early in the morning has a nature component to it--fishes are jumping, terns are diving, and a slight fog is present making the morning light have a very artistic component to it. Occasionally a seal pops his head up to see what in the world is that?? Really nice. I encourage you to paddle, but not on a SUP.
O Barry, you've inspired me! I've got the board (longboard not a SUP) up on my roof racks, all ready for a dawn patrol paddle tomorrow morning. No seals around here, but I often see dolphins, pelicans and jellyfish. No surf predicted but at least I'll be out there in position if a rogue two footer heads my way.
Wonderful!! I am happy to motivate you to do so. Nothing beats being in the water, waves or no waves!! And thanks for letting me know. I hope you have a beautiful morning and that the rogue wave offers you a nice wall to fly across!! From where you get in the water, pick a destination somewhere along the beach, paddle to it and back. Always remember, you have to paddle back, so your destination should not be on the horizon!! You will feel it in your back muscles the following morning.
I also agree with Barry - the best work out is paddling... Many benefits. I also do about 1-3 mi, depending on the time, a couple a times week. I'm not all spiritual about it- but it is the most calming thing in the morning and seeing all the nature is sooo refreshing... And just getting in the water when there are no waves. It is beautiful and one my most favorite times. The workout benefit is perfect too. My gym membership ran out a while ago and I don't have the time. Paddling only takes about 30 min and you feel great and stronger. Plus it gives you a lot of confidence when your caught inside on bigger surf. You don't get tired or out of breath no matter how many duck dives your doing. Some things that I have learned that might be of aid - I use to use my longboard but a friend gave me a 10ft windsurfing board that sat in my back yard forever. I tried to surf it one time and found its perfect for paddling! It's super thick and paddles like a dream. It's epoxy/plastic and floats well enough that I can knee paddle if my back starts to hurt or get tight when prone paddling. I have seen them cheap on Craiglist too... I also got one of the cheap plastic bag things that you can put a phone in and make it waterproof. So I take me old phone and found a running app that tracks/maps how far you when. How fast ect... Which is kinda cool... I guess idk but it's neat to see where you paddled. Anyways- it's the best thing ever. Yous guys should try it. Just stay out of everyone's way... It's best to do it alone at dawn. Heard Belmar is the best place to go for paddling.
Absolutely, or as the kids say: toats! Water time is the best time. I've seen turtles, all kinds of fishies and birds. No bales lately, but ya never know....
Which way is the block oriented? Length of block along the line of the spine, or perpendicular? Also which sides of the block are on the floor/your back?
