I hate people that let their kids do whatever they want

I dated A LOT of girls back in the day.

The girls whose parents allowed a reasonably permissive teenaged lifestyle turned out to be exceptional human beings, because they were allowed to sow their oats (to a point) and as such, got a lot of things out of their young systems.

OTOH, the girls whose parents were strict and religious did not allow their teenaged daughters to do much of anything...no Rock-n-Roll music, no dances, no makeup, no jewelry, no dating, etc. etc. etc.

Guess what happened to Group B? Yep, you guessed it. By the time they hit 18, they were out boozing it up and slutting out hard. Most of them got knocked up at an early age. Some actually outgrow it in their mid-to-late 20's...some never do.

Kinda makes the whole "Preacher's Daughter" thing a bit more relevant, que no?

 

No one leaves your van of doom feeling awesome, that's for sure.

There is a big difference between raising a child with principals and standards, giving them an opportunity to apply those principles and standards, and holding them accountable when poor choices are made (teachable moments) verses raising them in an "insular" fashion. I would suspect Group B (in KR's narrative -- which I too have seen unfold) was raised in a very insular fashion and did not learn how to handle "the world".

My approach is to inoculate (teach) a child with the "Love and Truth" antibodies so that they can gracefully and wisely conduct themselves as they engage the world around them. Additionally, living consistently before them modeling what you say in what you do is crucial.
