Some people are saying some fisherman were chumming near the pier. Leave it to these fisherman with no IQ that are trying to catch sharks. Idiots.

Man, that's tough to hear. I hope they can live life as normal as possible. Teenagers too :(

This morning, I thought I saw what looked like a hammerhead dorsal fin, moving around about 30-50 yards away from me. Looked like it was chasing something, but then again, what do I see a another 50 yards int he opposite direction? A small fishing boat throwing fish guts off to the side, while a bunch of surfers and swimmers are also in the water.

A week ago, I was walking up to the water during low-mid tide. The water was extra clear in the shallow area. Saw a 2 ft sand shark just swimming along towards some kids playing in the shallow water. I scared the little guy away, just to prevent any possible interactions with the young kids. Those guys are pretty docile, but I know they can sometimes bite out of curiosity.

That is why I stay away from piers.
Speaking of idiot fishermen, I saw a surf fisherman cast in right next to an area where 4 young girls were attempting to surf on beginner boards. There was plenty of beach wide open, but this arsehole chose a populated spot.

This is why I think all surfers should always order "shark-fin soup" before every meal!!
It is a "them or us" situation. What the hell, if we kill off mosquitos, we should apply same philosophy to sharks. And after sharks, we should kill off the liberals that are going to reply to this post screaming foul!! hahahaha!!
My bet says these were bull sharks.
I wish the kids the best--that is sucky news. Hopefully North Carolina will start a "shark bounty".

Friend of mine shot a video of a shovel nose in calf deep water on Sullivan's last week View attachment 15895 ...again fairly docile but still...i wonder since those bites were arms if it was a different type of shark compared to the leg bites from Bulls etc that normally occur? And really I never see anyone catch much surf fishing except certain spots here and there I wonder why they still do it?

A twelve foot tiger tagged by Ocearch pinged Thursday morn in the Cape Fear at Kure beach. This is just a little north of Oak Island. Wonder if this was the shark that attacked them? Seem likely due to the nature of the injuries.

I wouldn't be surprised about the chumming or the throwing at the young girls. Yet we're the ones who get fined or yelled at if we're 190ft from the pier when we're suppose to be 200ft away. I love fishing but I hate stupid ****ing rednecks. Still, two fairly severe bites at the same beach about 45 minutes apart is kinda crazy.

Would a 16 foot white shark be that close to shore? Article said one of the attacks was a shark about four feet so that one wasn't Mary Lee. I'd think if a great white that big bit a young teen it would be even worse than losing an arm.

The 4 foot shark was an attack in Ocean Isle last Thursday (south of Oak Island). It was no where near as bad as the two attacks yesterday on Oak Island. The one that attacked the two kids yesterday must have been far bigger than 4 ft.

One of the articles posted by WH2O said the attacks were likely by a Bull or Tiger Shark.

no reason for any shark species to still be on the endangered list. only reason they are is these crack pot conservationists who selfishly want someone else to pay for their boats and time out at sea strokin themselves everytime they see a fin.

I like surf fishing, but some of these weekend warriors pi$$ me off! In DE there is a small area near the jetty were people surf. (Small in comparison to the miles of open beach north of here or south) They set up camp and cast out right in the middle of where people are surfing. I have not had an issue with these people, but I can see it coming

Others have already had run-ins with fishermen this summer, and the Delaware SRF has been working on this issue with the Parks. Any sort of fishing restrictions, no matter how small an area, is contentious given the overcrowding of ORVs and the lack of any state law or regulation to support managing an area for surfing safety over other uses.
