anyone use a face mask or "buff" for sun protection in the water?

Hi, the dawn patrol east coast sun is angling right under my hat brim, and burning through the zink-oxide lotion. I am getting spots on the left side of my face. I just ordered some opaque Zinka, but - while I go get those spots checked out <grimmace> - has anyone here ever tried wearing a poly mask or "buff" while they are in the water?
    Thanks
PS Dakine Indo hat has a cape but it appears to cover the back of the neck, not the side?
PPS "fashion/looking cool" ranks well below "surfing" and "not dying" on my list of priorities.

I do not mean this in any sarcastic way, but you have a legit excuse to wear a mexican wrestling mask, if I werte you, I'd lean towards that.

Saw a guy in sunday with all this blue stuff on his face, some kind of special zinc?

wearing a buff while surfing would be like getting water boarded

Just sew two or more pieces of cloth in the indo hat so it covers what needs to be covered.. If u have to see one in front two and cut eye holes out so u can see

Some idiot tourist will probably call the cops, tell them there's a terrorist out surfing. Or maybe it's just Shark Hunter in his ski mask.

Well, they've discontinued my favorite sunscreen, which was Mustela/baby spf 50. That stuff was a thick, white titanium paste that stuck to my face even after 2 or 3 hours of water time. So maybe I'll have to get a ski mask myself, that is if there are actually any waves to ride in the forseeable future.

Hey are you one of those pasty kids slathered in zinc who surfs at squan/

Do you have red board, a blue board or a yellow jawn?

If you fit this criteria just rock your hood all summer you'll fit in perfect with the rest of the peoples there wearing 5/4 and 4/3 boots and gloves in 65 degree water complaining aboot it still being cold all while it's 90 degrees outside

Ah man I tell you I'm in some kind of funk today

Dawn patrol this time of year is 5 a.m. If you're getting burned at 5 a.m. you should just find a new hobby. Preferably indoors.

I have a friend who is almost albino, and is bald. He has a vacation place down in Costa Rica. He uses a white long sleeved rashguarde with a hood sewn in/attached made of the same material (maybe they are on the market) so he puts that on along with an Indo hat and surfs for like 4 hours at a time.

    Nice Shark Hunter ref.

Try Watermans or Sun Bum Pro. Either stays on for hours. Watermans maybe more so.

just grab a bandana and wrap your face with it like you're an old tyme robber from the wild wild west ... pretty cheap solution, and best part about it, you can still breathe

I have a white hooded rashguard for those blistering hot CA sessions when just sunscreen alone can't keep up with the intensity of the sun. Also keep a "face stick" of sunscreen in boardshort pocket for constant reapply to avoid the burn. Hooded rashies available online....
