they can final say "it's the only sport in the world where you may be eaten during competition."

also adriano retains #1 overall and the BS (brazilian storm) continues to be on top.

Mick Fanning is Crocodile Dundee and Chuck Norris's love child. I mean, what can't he do? Crikey. He came back from a horrific hamstring tear and won world titles, guzzles beer like a champ and says racist stuff and keeps his job, marries models, punches sharks, kills it at J-Bay and all over the bloody planet.

why yall neegas hating on slater for giving fanning some comfort after a somewhat traumatic experience?

what about the boat captain that gave fanning a hug,was he doing it for publicity?dumbest shyt iv heard in a while, yea slater needs the publicity, not like hes on mens health mags, tmz, fox news,11 time world champ, blah blah blah.

and yea that could've been slater if he beat mick in the semis.what if it was slater?what if that shark ate the shyt out of slater and everyone on here would be crying "oh no the king is gone!!!"

media blew this whole thing out of proportion, people come into contact surfing with sharks every other day, they don't get no spotlight.i just feel bad for mick since hes been the man for almost 18 yrs and now he is "famous."

oh yea and j bay legend derek hynd was in the water 1 hr after the incident ripping j bay all by himself.if u neegars are afraid of sharks, stay out the damn ocean

they're talking kelly giving mick a hug (which, btw, is not in caroline's link). I don't see what was so awkward about it. Apparently, mick thought kelly was going to talk, but got a hug instead...understandable, considering, there was a very high possibility he could've been seriously injured in that shark situation.

Most amazing close call I've ever seen in a comp......2 whites?.....looks like it to me.......Mick is looking back when another splash happens in front of him......the "Yum Yum Yellow" art on the bottom of his board....I was told about yellow when I lived on Oahu.....thanks to Kimo's in Kailua.....

    MICK........GLAD UR OK..........

Word.. .Why all the Slater hate? He gave an interview bacause they asked him for an interview. He hugged Mick because they are good friends and Mick was rattled. He went to hug Julian because he was also rattled.
You wouldn't give your friend a hug if he went through that?

But I don't think it was blown out of proportion. That was one of the heavier things I've ever seen. I don't care if it was trying to bite him or not. Everyone here would freak the fu*k out if that happene to them... And if you were in the water when it happpened you'd be telling everyone you know if could have been you... Bet

Agreed, that sh*t was no joke. These are the best surfers in the world and they were all shook. Pretty sure any of us would be too. Funny to poke fun at Slater but he seems like a genuine dude to me. And I'm not even a pro surfing fan to be honest, rarely watch comps, didn't see this one, just saw this video.

look on the coverage vid and you can see him. Thought that was kinda funny seeing him out the back surfing with the commentators talking about a shark attack in the foreground.

I'm not into surfing as a sport at all either but I just recently started watching these comps and I have to say They are great to watch because you get to see great surfers surfing a whole "session". You see them catch every wave in the heat good or bad. you see them getting caught inside just like we do and you see the waves being surfed from drop in too the exit. Most videos I've seen lately are just short clips of an maneuvers. I like to see how the surfer got to that point and what came next. like after they landed did they make it to the next section? The way they show comps now with drones and different camera angles is awesome. Big fan of the heat analyzer. If you scroll through the heats you can pick which heat you want to watch. I skip heats with average wave scores of 4. and watch the ones with a average 7 or better.

I've been bumped and lifted out of the water by a sea monster...

On a deserted beach in Corolla, NC...

And no one hugged me afterwards.

You're supposed to see sharks in South Africa. It's what they do.

Well, the Slater hate was predicated upon the assumption that Kelly had to get into the spotlight because he doesn't like others getting attention.

Which would not surprise me 't-all.

Man it sucks being at the top, everyone wants to bring you down. Poor Kelly. Poor Sean Slater.

not what I saw. If you watch the guys in the booth at one point you see a guy catch one and do stuff you would need fins to do.

but that vid was awesome too.

Good points. It's not that I don't ever catch a comp or a heat. I do from time to time if I got nothing else going on that's more important to me, but you're right, with the upgraded technology they are visually appealing for sure. I just don't get caught up in the whole tour and follow it like a sport. I have no idea who is doing well or who is doing bad. No clue what the rankings are or any of that. I just enjoy watching great surfing on awesome waves like you do from time to time. I might watch 3-5 heats per year, just guessing of course.
