Some of y'all know that I travel (a lot) for surfing. This year it's CR x3, San Diego x3, Barbados, France, Mexico, Hawaii.
Already set for 2016 are CR, SAN, France & Peru.

I don't pay for airline tickets & I don't pay for lodging. Oh, and my gf travels w me, also free. We always sit in biz or first. There's a few idiot trolls on SI who jealously rant about how I must be some rich dude. Whatever. Not even close.

    Here's how you do it.

    Start here:
    http://thepointsguy.com/

    And here:
    http://onemileatatime.boardingarea.com/whats-the-point/

    This is worth reading:
    http://www.rollingstone.com/culture/features/ben-schlappig-airlines-fly-free-20150720

And this has massive amounts of info, too:
    http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/miles-points-1/

It takes a bit of your time to dig into this stuff & grab the best deals. But, c'mon, who's kiddn who here - - you have the time; you're reading this tread, eh?

Bottom line: free travel in a world where the airlines are hosing everyone, it's prohibitively expensive to fly internationally & you are thinking you'll never be able to fly in the big seats.

Most of you won't bother to put the effort in. And that's fine.

I haven't paid for a plane ticket in over 10 years.

    Happy hunting!

This ^^ right here, posted from giving head while high, is why this Forum has predominantly crapola getting posted.

Dig another ditch for the man & do it early tomorrow, boy. Before the heat shortens more of your pathetic baboon-ass-facial-hair existence.

I'm into the same shez, and i can say to pull "free tickets" is not that easy.

It was when manufactured spending was easier, but it will take a great deal of time in research alone.

If you stay committed you can swindle some nice ones, however, this wont happen over night.

I really do not know how you can say you haven't paid for a flight in over 10 years, feel free to PM me with some secrets if you want

yankee, you should try to make some money off this if all true. Me being lazy I would pay for help in getting a trip greatly reduced in price.

Good topic...for those who actually surf/travel. I have said here before, if you live on the EC and Surf, and have not traveled (atleast go to CR or Cali), then you are missing out.

Yank, I have oversimplified by gig. I use my credit card points as cash. Each year, I use my card for every large purchase possible (not advised for the irresponsible). I earmark those dollars for surf travel. Last year was around 1700.00 and I near $1000 for 15'. It did not pay for my HI trip last year but certainly helped. The prior trip to CR, I nearly paid for my whole trip. One more thing, I found that taking the cash and buying my own ticket worked better than using the "card rewards" for airfare.

If you can pull all of those trips with free airfare, I may have to delve into your scheme!

    Wish I had the time - - I don't.

When I have a ton of surplus miles, I'll get a ticket for a buddy. Either gratis or some small amount of chips for a ticket that is upwards of $900.00. One was for a RT biz class ticket to Asia, $8k if paid cash (wtf who has that kind of money for an airline seat) but 'the special price' was $400.00 = everybody happy.

It's not easy, and it's not overnight, I agree with you. I'd just say to scope out those primer links I mentioned; it also helps if you maximize all your spending to where you can generate multiples in terms of returns in miles/points.

damn i just wasted three hours at work. That being said, thanks for the link Yankee...I've been wondering about how feasible it would be to do this for an annual trip to costa, PR or Nica. Those links really helped!

I have some co-workers that do this. We got in a big discussion about it recently, and dont you have to pay taxes on it if you redeem your miles as cash? wouldn't this negate any benefit of buying your ticket that way? Or do you have to pay taxes either way you redeem them?

Lonesome, I did not receive a 1099. I would argue (to IRS not you) that any interest I pay is deductible if rewards are taxable. I try not to pay any interest...would defeat the purpose I guess. Any CPAs on here?

did u say u havnt bought an airline ticket in 10 yrs?

ok I didn't go to all the links u posted,i do not have that much time.i did read a thing in surfer mag a few yrs ago about the flyer points, where u take like 10 flights and the next 1 is free or something.and yea the last minute deals,i know about them but u get stuck in the tailend of the plane.

so what do u do for a living?are u ur own boss?not hating on u lol, taking 20 surf trips a year is one thing, but ur allowed to take multiple vacations a year(work).even vaca time and sick time don't add up for all those trips.i get 2 weeks for 2 yrs of work.been like that at every job I worked at.

for instance, even if I was rich,i wouldn't be able to just take days off work to go chase a swell, wish I could, but not in this lifetime.shyt I cant take a day off for a local swell, like say Friday is going to be pumping, which it aint, and I told my boss Monday I need to take off he would say no.i have to give atleast 3 weeks notice before taking a day off,and swell forecasts don't predict that far ahead.i work in construction and attendance is the most important thing in my line of work,u don't show up the job simply doesn't get done,so we close down highways for nothing because I want to go surf lol
