Just wanted to comment on this before I leave for good. Actually, indigenous tribes of Africa routinely hunted and killed lions as soon as they developed weapons to take them on. They were considered a threat and competition. Almost all Native tribes around the world had no concept of "it's their environment". Or they are "majestic animals" or "Take pictures and don't touch anything" or "fair hunting". This is modern Discovery/Disney channel stuff. The tribes were not afraid to defend themselves. It was all about survival and the lions were a serious threat to the safety of the people and they also competed for resources. This "cecil" the lion stuff is fantasy lion king Disney stuff. A lion is a ferocious beast that will kill anything. It's not a house cat. People back then had common sense. People nowadays throw a great white shark back in the water and go swimming. We've been away from the jungle for TOOOO long. The Inuit routinely kill polar bears. They've done this for generations and they do it now as well.
Oh and lastly, I'm totally against sport hunting giraffes and many other herbivorous animals for personal ethical reasons. They are nice sweet animals that don't harm you if you don't mess with them, unlike a lion. That being said, I don't think someone who hunts them should be executed or locked in prison for a long time. People on FB calling for life in prison. That's nuts. They're still just animals. Also, the notion that there is no risk in bow hunting a lion even with armed guides is laughable. Clearly they don't know how dangerous an animal like this is. Sure hunting a wolf(or any animal) from a helicopter carries zero risk. But going on the ground tracking a wounded lion is dangerous. Sure the hunter wins most times, but it's still potentially dangerous. Unlike hunting a giraffe or a deer. Hunting animals like grizzly bear, Tiger, Lions, leopard can be deadly for the hunter. The hunter can become the hunted even with a gun. These animals are incredibly fast. They know when their being tracked and can double back on you. There's basically zero sport/risk in shooting a deer.

IMO, we don't know the details yet. The hunter has not come out yet and made an official statement, I'm sure he's being lawyered up right now, trying to get the story straight. The media has pretty much rammed this guy, and we're only getting the dirt so far. With that said, the guy kinda looks like a creep, and seems like he has a complex (see that shirtless picture with him holding that dead leopard, flexing like he's Laird) What I can't wrap my head around is how the heck is it allowed to hunt rhino? Unless they found a dead one who passed naturally, and they just decided it was a good photo-op.
