don't bring your problems to the ocean

today was weird, i had a fairly ****ty/generally annoying day and decided to go clear my spirits in the water after work. made quick work of packing a towel, obviously and off i go.
i don't know... maybe the gods were not in my favor, or just generally my outlook on today was preventing me from getting into a rhythm, feeling the ocean, as say my last session.
the sidewinding 1' up chop on 4'-occ 5' sets didn't help either. (size was great, but i couldn't help but feel out of place on every incoming wave)
i was getting my assets handed to me... like 2 half decent rides in 1.5 hours.
im not frustrated, just got me thinking. i done brought my problems to the ocean. rawng.

sunday i was recovering for a two day rally of debauchery, spirits way up, probably still elevated, but not the point.
i remember charging to the beach like i was opening presents on christmas and it paid off - lost track of time completely and surfed into afternoon, despite plans with family, but was catching nice lefts the whole sesh. crazy. never happened. stoked for days. well...till work today...

so how about you fellas, what do you bring to the ocean and how does it affect your time with it?
do you go to blow off steam or relax?
    support your ideas.

    waves to all,

    Towel.

In the water is the place to get away from the problems. I paddle out and then get a feel for the oceans rythm. Being apprehensive and unsure of your purpose, the session will likely fail. Or, it could be the board.

I almost always paddle out in a good mood, but I have my days, always in the wrong place, can hardly catch sheet, etc. Then I have days that I paddle out and its like the universe connects. Catch everything I paddle for, always in the right place, etc. And surfing always helps clear my head, even on the bad days

    Towel,

I know what you be sayin'...for me it's almost like this duality thing, bc I do bring my problemmes to the ocean...everything I carry with me on a daily basis. Thing is, once I get out there, boom, they're gone, or at least I have a place to temporarily hide from them. But I step back on to the sand with my perspective re-alignment("go ahead, just tell him, the liberator who destroyed my property has re-aligned my perception"), and feel like those problemmes are really insignificant...especially when compared to that last shack that let me out..

So even if those problemmes interfere with your rythm, performance, et al, I'm sure you still came out feeling better.

Acouple sessions ago there was this meathead Bostonian yelling, punching waves, and generally acting belligerent. disrespecting the ocean and ruining peoples' time. I wanted to swim him to the bottom. That's the type of problemme not to bring imo.

I dunno. I have good and bad sessions like everybody but I've never felt it was due to baggage I'm carrying along. When I go out everything else in the real world disappears for me and all I'm concerned with is the immediate task at hand. I don't intentionaly do this, it just happens that way for me. It is the one time that I truly live in the moment. Nothing else matters except the next wave.

Woke up today to my left ear in need of painkillers. Fan freakin tastic. Is it ok to take to surf on ibuprofen? I'm trying to head out after work again today to redeem yesterday. That's not really the goal, but between that and foreseen scheduling conflicts till sun/mon I'm trying to get it in today.
I'm borderline considering surfing in a swimming headdress. Hot pink, of course.
I'll put on some rasta chill jams on my way down and take it easy.
You guys know any quick remedies for that ear though? I feel like it's an extension of yesterday's misconstrued attitude on my part. An extra F U, if you will.

    Towel,

you, imho, are completely spot on to be weary of ibuprofen. While I can't speak to that drug, the LD50 profile for acetaminophen is rather sketchy, especially when compared to other 'dangerous drugs', I believe the same could be said for ibp...

    Towlie,
Best thing about the ocean is you can bring your problems to the beach and they get washed a way for a while. Really any recreational activity does it. You can't solve them while your surfing but you can take a break from them. Sometimes while your surfing you come up with a solution that you wouldn't have. But most of those times you'll forget the solution before you get to act on it.. Either way, you going yesterday surfing helped you in some way. I know it.

Put a heating pad on your ear. If you want a weird trick fill a sock full of salt and throw it in the microwave and put that on your ear. Heat and salt will draw out the bad juju.

Over the winter sometimes my arms get this weird pain inside, I take ibuprofen and it's all good.

Thanks guys, I'll try to keep ibuprofen at minimum dosage, about an hour after dropping a 200mg pill I'm feeling a bit of relief.
Definitely will try the peroxide method, however the salt in sock is the kind of home remedy I can see myself trusting.

When it's big, I always say to myself; "thank you God for that which I am about to receive", then I paddle out with an empty mind. I usually enter the ocean with gratitude and thanks, even when it is dead flat.

Try white vinegar in the ear. It fizzes real good and kills everything. For me, it works better than HO. If you are a booger, an Advil liqu-gel is cool, but if you stand up surf, too much ibuprofen can effect your equilibrium if you are sensitive to meds like I am. I like the herbals.
