If I'm surfing a beach break and it's knee high I'll surf w/o a leash. It's good practice. But you gotta be careful cuz no one wants to be that guy. F*ck that guy!

The only other time I had a leash break (eons ago) it was big NE swell and my board washed up on the rocks. The worst part is I had to get up on the barnacle encrusted rocks to get my board. Stood ther ducking 5' swells amd taking a beating before throwing board to the other side crawling over and swimming to get it before it got to the next set of rocks. Walkup to the NA surf shop with my feet shredded and the dude let me clean up my wounds and had some aloe I put on the soles of my feet. Thanx GE if you're out there. That chit hurt like crazy for a few days.

NJ glide, The XM broke in 1 1/2 waves so I was suprised. I'm gonna go with Dakine and make sure I got an extra with me.

I only wax the bottom of my board the way the pros do.

I sent them a message with a picture of one that did the same thing and they promptly sent me a new leash. No questions asked.

That sucks! It's different if you're leash breaks, you tried at least. This dude didn't even try, he just thought he would show everybody how cool he was and paddled right up next to the Jetty so that he could get priority on everybody on every wave and lost his board on like the 1st wave he attempted, boom smack thud is all you heard when his board was hitting up against the rocks repeatedly, I was actually cracking up at him and pointing at him from across the lineup, f'ing dip sh*t.

I watched him climb the rocks to get out and then he inspected his board and when he realized it was toast he smacked it on the ground. Shoulda been mad at himself and just knocked himself out for that display of kookery. Oh ,and all this on a 3 foot day LMAO

Yep. I'll surf leashless up to maybe waist high if it's clean and there's not a ton of swimmers in the water. I usually dawn patrol, though so no swimmers. If there's swimmers, especially kids I'll use a leash because I'd never be able to forgive myself if my fin decapitated some kid. I rarely if ever lose my board, but you never know what could happen. But I think some people never learn to control their board because they use their leash all the time. That's not to say you can't learn to control your board and use a leash all the time, but there's not much incentive to. I also feel like it makes you more in tune with what the wave is doing and what it's about to do because you can't just fall off and bail if it closes out or the bottom drops out.

I've only been hit by someone else's board twice and both times the person was wearing a leash. They just felt it was OK to ditch their board because their leash would save them.

generally catch the board on a kickout but there are times I wipe out or times I don't surf fast enough to make a section. 30 + years never hit anyone I didn't mean to. JK. We get heavey touron infection so leash is law in the summer.

I see lots of dudes not using leashes and I also see them chasing their boards quite a bit.

It's pretty common here for guys to not use leashes. Not just longboarders either. I don't see many people chasing their boards, though. Usually the totally clueless are wearing leashes, thankfully. Not saying I'm a good surfer or anything, but I don't lose my board. If I fall, I fall in such a way that I can hang onto it. I am a full supporter of going leashless when appropriate. It really can make you a better surfer.

To each their own but I fail to see how using or not using a leash makes one a better surfer. If you don't wear one you will become a better swimmer for sure. If you do wear one you may attempt sections or moves that you may not be so ready to do if you gotta swim in to get your board when you fail. I've surf with and without and can't say it made a hill of beans in my overall surfing. Maybe I wore the wrong colored baggies that day?

using a leash makes me a better surfer. A leash lets me get more radical without subconsciously worrying about the board getting away from me if I fall. Only time I go without is when the waves are super tiny and I'm really just getting wet

I wear a leash if I want to get radical but that's not really my style anyways. I'm not out there doing throw away airs or any airs. Just different cultures I guess.
