less than a week ago...chick paddling out gave me some summer love by bailing on her board as I'm passing on a waist high wave. Her fins slice the top of my foot open.
thats were kookin gets sketch i got a board flung at me a few years ago sliced across my nose and under my eye...got really lucky
Have a break near me filled with kook a-holes! The waves break at the tip of the rocks and its a decent line. The problem is, you have about 15 to 20 people all sitting right there. They drop in on each other non stop and no one seems to mind this behavior. Boards are hitting each other, etc. (I try never to surf here) Then there is a guy who I guess feels like he owns the spot, hooting and hollering, just acting like an obnoxious a-hole. Saw him at the spot I normally surf the other week, I think he was out of his element because he wasn't acting so obnoxious.
The board hit you in the eye? You're lucky you didn't lose the eye. I guess I have been fortunate so far, my worst ditched surfboard injury was split skin and a nasty bruised lump on the forearm. It happened when some teenager paddling out on a shortboard with no leash lost control of the board.
Is it now safe to say SUP's aren't going away? Have they been around too long now to be considered just a passing fad?
No. They are not going away, especially since I see some of the best surfers in my area adding high performance models (~8' or less ) to their quivers and scoring 2' thru OH. But these guys are not the problem, it's the unskilled operators that are clueless of lineup decorum in crowded breaks. From following this thread it appears these types ride any type of craft. I would also suggest that 99% of us started off as kooks until we were enlightened and applied the knowledge.
That looks like when the Manasquan Rec hits the beach with their surf lessons. Literally 30+ kids and maybe 3-4 instructors in the water, who I cant tell if they even know what they're talking about themselves. Mass hysteria.
honestly, I don't mean to sound harsh but.. if you had any balls at all you would have gave him a good talking to for doing that. Why didn't you do anything about it?
Well once these guys realize you can only squeeze so much performance out of a 8x23x3 boat, they'll probably go back to their regular boards for decent waves. I see some guys that aren't half bad on SUPS although their style is usually ****ing gross with all the herky jerky stuff (same could be said about most surfers, though). But it's obvious their board is holding them back. If you're trying to do airs and fins free **** on a SUP, here's a tip: You're on the wrong ****ing board!
yeah.. but windsurfing is way harder. Any toolbag can SUP, and therefore....fock up your day with some brand new medical bills.
I understand what you are saying. However, some of the dudes I'm referring to know all this and are on a SB when conditions warrant it. So, the SUP is not holding them back, but adding to their "time on water". SUS continues to progress, in terms of board performance and skill of the high end users, especially as skilled watermen embrace them. Thus, IMHO I think they will be around for a while.
