I'm having a board shaped by a jersey shaper. It's a hybrid board, similar in shape to a Roberts dreamcatcher, everyday driver for east coast type waves. I'm 6'0" and 190 lbs, give or take. I have the choice of FCSII or Futures and I'd like to get opinions on which is better and why. I've only ever used the cheap-o glow-in-the-dark colored stock FCS fins. Guess I must be moving up in the world. Posting in Mid-Atlantic as those are the waves I'll be on most of the time. Thanks for any advice.
quads or thrusters? If you like the thrusters I would go with fcs2. Quads I would go with futures. I am a quad guy who is unhappy with the fcs2 lineup. I am already invested in fcs1 too far to change to futures so just use the tab filler to convert to fcs2. I am watching as fcs drips out a new quad setup every 2-3 months or so. I like bigger front fins and smaller rears... but nothing too small. So far the only pair that looks fun to me is thenewer dhd fcs2...http://www.surffcs.com/shop/surf-quads/fcs-ii-dhd-tri-quad-set On a side note. These fins look boss. http://www.alkalifins.com/fin-range/quad.html
It'd be 5-fin setup, so I'd have options but I would primarily keep it as a quad. I'm liking the sound of these... http://www.surffcs.com/shop/surf-quads/fcs-ii-sf4-pc-carbon-quad-set ...both functionally and their pretty colors, haha. Any reason for futures if going quads beyond selection? (i.e. fins popping out, fin boxes breaking, one more secure than the other, generally better performance, etc...) Thanks for that first link you sent though. They are only ten bucks more and you get 5 fins.
Jersey shaper?? You have my very deep expression of sympathy. I am sorry for your loss. Eventually, you will be in a better place.
I know a few people who have had fcs fin box issues. I think that's nearly as tragic (and costly) as snapping off your nose. I've never had a problem with futures and will likely ride them for life. Also, JJF rides futures...
i personally prefer futures, but I would go with whichever company whose fin templates you like more, as it sounds like you have not invested in good fins from either.
Futures are a faster (less drag) better flush mounted system than FCS offers, IMO. I too, have lots of FCS fins, but the next quad I get will have futures. To go fast as the wind. There are a couple old dudes here who ride 6'10" mini mini LB shapes with quads and are killing it on semi choppy, semi chunky, kind of lined up but sectiony, waist to shoulder high typical EC onshore days. No reports yet on good waves.
No update to futures boxes because they don't need to update them. Fins have more base so flex can work off fin body and tip construction. I prefer a solid base. Plus the Fins are everywhere and can be found for a good price online (Google search got me new jordys for 50 dollars). I built my quiver with futures and enjoy having a slew of good priced fins to play with. But if you're too lazy to screw a fin in and too cheap to buy some little screws every once in awhile then FCS is your only option
Whoaaaa. It's all about the fin templates, flex, and foils. Nothing about the brand affects speed. IMO, the giant holes that a 5-future-finboxed-fandangle creates will slow ya down but theres been a lot of tittat on that. I have been a fin nerd for a while. Knowing what sort of feeling you want in a fin setup is crucial as well as testing different templates. Get to know the surface area/rake of fin setups... maybe a bit on their flex. That's all ya gotta know.. sort of like finding a board with similar volume to what you need. I know i likey about 12sq inches in my rear quads and no more than 15.5 in the fronts. I like flex because it feels wonderful on a bottom turn. Most of the quads I ride are mediums although I should be riding larges at my weight (beer and kids got to me). I had to buy different pairs over the years and blow awesome surf days trying new fins to know this.
I'm a huge fan of FCS Fusion. To me they are the best all around fin system. Very strong and no shortage of fin selections.
in my opinion futures have more of the glassed in feeling to them , the base of the fin stays firmer . Where the fcs and fcs 2 flex a little more than the futures , The problem i had with fcs was with the tabs on the fins they'd break and occasionally the tab box , those would break lose . My favorite fins are the old yellow and black occy fins by fcs , but i have broken so many pairs , and they don't make them anymore , so i switched to futures for long term abuse .
