Flhurrcane.com:"The model suite has shifted far to the right today after ingesting more concrete information, but this does nothing for the Bahamas, which are experiencing their first October Category 4 hurricane in what may be almost 150 years.

Although the Cone of Uncertainty has thus trended away from the US, it is still much too early to let ones guard down. More model runs will come in, and we will need to see some more run-to-run consistency, and then proof that these latest runs are verifying. Regardless of a direct hit along the east coast or not, potentially catastrophic flooding will be possible over the weekend and/or into early next week from roughly the Carolinas to Northeast.
    -"

This storm seems only to be good for Florida. So far.

Try keeping up with the forecast paths. You might have a shot at getting through life without being so scared all the time.

One who goes through life with knowledge doesn't drop in on someone and then get bent when their sh!t gets thrown in the ocean.

NE winds here for days and more of the same for the following week. The cleanup is expected to be a small and quick. Surfing anyway but need some clean surf.
    Road trip time!

while we just get a ton of wind from this northeaster to ruin a perfectly good hurricane swell, Portugal and France are forecast to get a TON of clean long period swell from Joaquin as it approaches Ireland later next week.....like 10-15 feet at 17 seconds with light local winds...right when the Quiksilver Pro France contest gets started...it looks like they are going to set a big swell event right at the start of the contest window.

It's a sad day when our Merican models are exposed as cheap low res ho bags.

Good stuff. I guess I will get that big screen for event streaming after all.

Just back from FRA last Friday. DOH+ beach break, shorter period, on several days but lotta (painful) closeouts. Nothing as huge what you're projecting next week. WSL will be on fire.

    yank, any pics?

and were the beaches topless? pics?

    wind patterns?

I am more interested in this excursion than your Nica ones, for sure

not that you live to entertain me, but I am dying to know. I am highly interested in a fall excursion in 2016/2017

I don't have pics, yet. And my surfing is nothing to write home about anyways.

Yah the beaches are often topless. Sometimes amazing, so often inspiring. Sometimes horrifying if mademoiselle is pushin' 70 :D

So, there's a clip on Surfline right now of JJF winning Hossegor last year, and that clip perfectly sums up what Hossegor can be. It's frame #4 of the 'Here Comes the Quiksilver Pro' article.

JJF says something like (paraphrasing) 'It's not easy at all, it's really good waves every once in awhile but it's hard to find 'em & it's hard to know when to go, you just gotta go to find out if they're gonna be good or not'

Man, is he ever tellin' the truth. You see in that clip where he is totally committed on his paddle. There's no going back or pulling off. And as JJF indicates & refers to, without literally saying, there are a lot of lippy, powerful closeouts. Anyone who has surfed France & Portugal would agree with JJF. But when you get a good one, it's flyin' time.

The rips are like nothing I've ever experienced. Very powerful. Wide. Sometimes you actually have to get out of the water & walk around them to get back on the peak. Even on HH days the power is there. The waves pack a punch. Which is a lotta fun on HH to OH. Bigger than that & you're in for some beatings. France doesn't have the Continental Shelf to deflect swell power like we right coasters do, MIS. Similar to the swell power that booms out of the PR Trench.

Even sheltered spots like Cap Breton can crank.

The Frenchies are impressive. Lotta very good riders, esp on short boards. Places near parking lots get real crowded. Go further up the line to find some peaks with less than 70 people on 'em.

Wind patterns: shifty in September. Go early in the day for glass. Tides play a role, of course. Winds tend to pick up in the early afternoon. If it's big enough swell, then onshore won't matter. You'll be busy battling the rip anyways, lol.

We watched Le Nord, from 1/2 mile, go 40-50', barreling & spitting like Pipe one afternoon. No one was out there in that  Crazy huge.

Food: amazing. Vino: more amazing (and no sulfites like USA). If I were younger, France coastline is def a place I'd spend 6 months to a year. For a whole lot of reasons.

Fly into BOD from EWR or JFK or PHL or IAD. Then it's a 2 hour drive or less on modern highways to Hossegor. You can catch Air France or KLM or Delta through Amsterdam or De Gaulle to Bordeaux.

3/2 wetsuit, no booties, sunscreen for those nice sunny days. I like to bring 2 suits so you can sorta dry them out a bit. Bring rain gear for walking in the evenings the storms roll in for a day or two. Temps from about 50 degrees F to near 80 degrees F.

Plenty of rental boards available. Recommend bring own leash & strings.

Dollar near parity with Euro, so that's better than in previous years. All USA surf gear there is way overpriced btw.

If the Hossegor area is out of control, and believe me it can get unsurfable, then cruise 45 mins on down to Hendaye near the Spanish sorder. Sheltered & HH or bigger on sets but a fun wave nevertheless. San Sebastien, Spain is a very cool city for a day trip for tapas & great sangria. San Sebastien has decent breaks but always very crowded. Stop by Pukas surf shop while there.

It wasn't a big day when I surfed Bidart, but it's a fun river mouth break not far from Hossegor.

Biarritz also worth a stop. Can easily barrel & is a tough paddle out if swell is over 5'. Good surfing there at La Grand Plage & other breaks. Curren made his home for many years at Anglet, next door.
