I'm trying to zero in on what type of surfboard to get. I used to primarily ride shortboards, but was frustrated by not having a high wave count per session. A few years back I got a 5'6 quad fish that is wide and thick and I have a blast riding the board as I catch waves with ease. My issue is that at 5'6 and with a low rocker it's too skatey to catch waves over head high + My height: 5'7 Weight: 175 Skill level: average, I can ride down the line front side and back side and can muster a few soft snaps. Wave type: Nj, knee high - 2ft overhead What I'm looking for: my top priority is catching waves and easy paddling. At the same time I want to be able to maneuver the board and ride waves that have some juice when the time comes. Board ideas?: Channel Islands average joe? Dumpster diver?
if you still have a quad for small days i would go with a average joe, rook, flyer, or maybe the dfr. roberts g-step is what i would look at if i were you
I am down with the Flyer as metard points out. Get one that is a bit larger than you need (2 in. larger) so you can catch waves with ease. Once that is done....go kill yourself for asking dumbass questions.
Larger Flyer a good option, but given what you're riding...I'm selling an hp fish that could suit you. It has a higher range and is a performance oriented fish....Von Sol Mystic 1. Would be a great option give the information you offered and compliment your current ride...Check the description below...pm me if your interested... Von Sol Mystic 1: 5'6"x20 1/2"x2 5/16" Deaigner didn't give me the volume but guessing around 27+ liters; EPS/Epoxy; foiled rail, comes with the mystic quad fins--all the hype on the 'erbb is true--LINK
One man's wide and thick is another's narrow and thin. Can you measure the width and thickness? Knowing those will help you get to proper dims in your better wave board. Also, it sounds like you're digging the more forward surface area of the fish. Are you thinking along those lines for better waves or are you looking to improve your shortboard dims for better waves based off the fish?
Flyer is a good choice. Brad just got a Roberts that looks like it might fit your wants. Dream Catcher I think it was? Any who look for the tread. Oh and can't remember who but a month or two ago somebody got two sweet new sticks with awesome 80's style colors. Man those were fukin sick!
those are mine. The bigger one is a Roberts "Modern 80s"...which I think might be a little more HP than the OP is looking for. Flyer looks a little too HP, as well...and I doubt the Average Joe is going to handle HH waves very well. The Roberts Dream Catcher and Von sol Mystic suggestions sound more along the right track.
I need a new board ? I think most of us want one although I don't think we need one. Get with a shaper and have him watch you surf then let him work his magic.. Which brings me to question .. anyone ever hear of an awesome shaper who is female?
If you want to catch more waves- and paddle better- The Basic rule of thumb is adding volume. Although it's much more complex then just volume- but keep that in mind- either thickness or width. Not always length! A lot of ppl get thrown off by thinking the length matters most- but that's not always true. Also the basic shape has a lot to do with it too. ANYWAYS like others have mentioned- the Flyer is a good choice. It's a basic board and surfs well in a variety of conditions. Catching waves easy. Plus since it's not too 'high tech' and more on the basic side- you will be able to push your skill level higher, faster and transition to a different board later on. By that time you'll know exactly what you want. I actually have a flyer tucked away for those winter days when I want to catch a lot of waves but feel weighed down by the wetsuite. It's a tuflite which adds to the buoyancy. With the right fins in that board- it surfs great!
and make sure it's a twin fin longboard, single fins are too mainstream edit- nevermind, just go finless. fins are too mainstream
The Flyer is too middling, no good in mush, not great in juice. Get a fish. More versatile. Maybe a swallow tail rocket fish shape with a bit more rocker for steeper bowly sections. Go to Orion or Kechle or Quiet Flight or Natural Art websites to look at high volume semi-high performance models for fun east coast conditions for intermediate to advanced surfers.
Good question, the answer is no. Never. Which begets another question: Why not? My guess is it is too dirty to appeal to the normal female. Wait!..... Christie Murphy and Jenny Flannigan shape Siren brand longboards and fun shapes for wahines, and they are really really nice. Siren = mermaid and they are two savvy and skilled sirenas.
A lighter board helps about as much as volume...but the main factor in catching more waves is just being in better shape. A lot of people think volume, wider nose or whatever is going to allow them to up their wave count...even if they've been sitting at a computer for weeks on end. Doesn't really work that way. thanks. I have a theory why Hydroflex airbrushed my rails for free: they recently changed their logo and needed a photo of a Modern 80s with the new logo on it for the website (guess not many people get Mod80s in Hydroflex). Don't know why they washed out the color so much, but that's definitely my board.
