Hey boys and girls! I am working on getting in better shape for surfing and wanted to know what workouts exercises people find best for paddling and popping up, excluding paddling and freestyle swimming which would obviously be best. I find push ups are better than bench presses, as I was able to bench 300 for 7 reps at start of year and found it didn't translate to anything in the water as paddling endurance is far more important than paddling strength. Right now I am splitting between perfect pushups, dips, pulls ups, reverse pushups, and also reflex bag and heavy bag as I find keeping the hands up with 14 oz gloves for a few rounds really helps burn the same muscles involved with paddling. Running and jump roping I will throw in after I drop a couple of stones as I don't want that impact on my lower body right now, and core I am already indirectly targeting with all the exercise I am doing and will probably add in more core on punching days soon. I am really looking for that exercise(s) I can do to fill up my liver with lactic acid to the point I want to puke, turns my arms into a jelly like rubber, and leave me feeling exhausted like I would on a rough paddle out day. Thanks.
Burpees. It's pretty much a pop-up. You can do them 'till you puke if you so desire... There's a book called Fit to surf that you can pick up on the cheap, too.
burpees. HIIT workouts. vinyasa flow yoga. running from Po-leeece. digging trenches. Just Dance 2016 marathon sessions. sweaty sexin' sessions. swimming. just move. also, make sure you keep that core strong and your muscles stretched. you can't do that enough. if you are an office donkey like me, you will eventually feel the damage done from sitting the wrong way for a decade or two. so, make sure you get up and move every 30 mins and stretch or some sh**. sitting for 8 hrs a day is worse that being active all day and smoking a few cigs here and there. that's my unprofessional opinion.
"off season" is when it's flat, not when it's cold. You either need a thicker wetsuit, or hairier cajones for more R-value. that being said... swimming and cross-fit (aka, really expensive burpees ).
Off season...summers over bruh Real surfers don't crossfit neither You got any flakka for me and Doug Whatchu think this is some surf social..bring your Kale and yoga mats
Yes. Memorial Day to Labor Day is surfing season. The rest of the year would be considered the off season. The OP is wise to spend the off season preparing for that wonderful weekend in May when it all begins anew.
