I am about to get my knee scoped on the 21st because the Dr. cant figure out why my knee wont get better. I injured my knee plying basketball in July and it is still messed up. MRI showed acl strain and maybe small meniscus tear. They said it wouldn't need surgery originally. They also said MRI could miss something.

My pain is on the outside/ back of my left knee. If i were to bend my leg all of the way and stretch my quad i get a sharp pain on the outside of the knee.

    Please diagnose

also about 2 weeks ago my dog pulled me when I was taking him out the door and my good knee twisted and popped and now feels exactly like the left.

What is dis sh:t? I am having trouble walking.

Ok thanks i should have asked sooner. I think he was thrown off because My knee does not pop or lock...Does it still bother you? Did they just cut some of the meniscus away?

    Get it done.

The longer you wait, the worse the damage you do to your body.

Strongly recommend an orthopedic guy who has a great rep (ask the top PTs who should cut you - - they know because they see the results of the handiwork) & who is is actively treating pro athletes. They 'get it' over the standard cutters who think their job is to make it so you can get to Safeway & back without falling over.

Oh, and you will likely develop arthritis in your later years. That's a fact, jack, and some cutters will tell you & some won't but it's nearly unavoidable when they remove/shave your meniscus. Soooo....have as much fun as you can in these years.

Had both knees scoped over the years. Lotta wear & tear & injuries from years of high level competition.

Fvck this is depressing. Im only 21 and my dr said i already have some arthritis when he bent leg and held my knee cap. I also had a ruptured disk in my back get scraped out. My surfing days are probably numbered.

Keep surfing when you can .you may have to modify HOW you surf. Like that paralyzed pro surfer has found ways to surf even though it's nothing at all like what he used to call surfing.

All the injuries mean you've been participating in life.

    Get a second opinion

See another ortho preferably one that did a sports medicine fellowship and if mri normal get an Mri arthogram. That's an Mri w contrast in the knee. 10% more accurate than one without contrast. Going in just to look around rarely turns up anything fixable.

Not sure if its close enough to you, but you should try Orthopaedic Associates. They helped me out. But the Yank makes a good point of check out the PTs first and see who they say. I should done what you did and consulted swellwebmdinfo.com, but live and learnne. Like I said, they did good for me, and I know a few people that have been to them and are doing better now. Good luck man

Also, Betty, that is an awesome quote and I'll have to remember that

I always thought of scopes as Doctor's way of saying, "If you have the money we can play around in there and try and clean some ish up." Most friends in the medical field think it has the potential to be a waste of time.

I put off hip surgery (scope) and got myself much more core fit and it made a world of difference. IF you can go after what caused the injury in the first place, you could avoid the knife.

But doesn't "core fit" mean, for you, that you bought a slimmer bong so you can suck in more smoke per toke??

What do you mean by this? I would be willing to try something else. I twisted my knee while landing.

Do you mean go after the a hole that swiped my legs out from under me while jumping?

I concur with Yank, et. al., to find a sports othopaedic doctor. If you have meniscus tears it is better to get them smoothed and cleaned up. Otherwise they rip further. They will also be able to determine if you have any ligament issues. Additionally, the full course of PT may provide exercises that will not only help the recovery process, but also provide proactive measures (i.e., stretches, strengthen, etc.) that may help avoid injuries going forward. Get it taken care of and be diligent in your PT. I had both knees scoped over 10 years ago and once I was fully recovered, they remain good. Be encouraged.

Ride a Bike excruciating at first but so isn't walking. If you don't use it you lose it.

Yes, but I opted for cortisone injections. Those have their pros and cons but my body reacts well to it. I've only had to get them 4 times, and used their PT at the Destin office. Now I just keep up on the stretches, etc. It's not a permenant fix but it's worked so far and I'm no less active, more so actually soz that I don't slow down. Could be an option for you. That said, a guy at work has been cut by them and is doing well and still goes out. Also I wouldn't worry about your surfing days being numbered. I've switched to riding with a stripper pole and can stay out much longer with more rides, and can still walk with the board to the car after and still play with my kids (and wife). I still can ride the long board, but not as long. I hope it works for

Also, as state by other posters, do your homework & find out the reputation of the surgeons in your area. Like in any profession, there are good ones and not so good ones. I was fortunate to know people who had very positive experience with the surgeon that scoped my knees.
