So... If you have a job that makes you a sellout. Got it

Sellout? Walk into a Kmart and look at the section devoted to Adam Lambert's 'clothing line.' That's selling out.

I won't be buying an outerknown shirt or drinking purps or Chia pods... probably ever. But I still don't think that makes him a sellout. The guy might have bad business sense, but he actually believes in these ventures one way or another. If he wanted the easiest cash grab... he could have a line of summer clothing at Kmart... like Adam Lambert.

Now.. we could talk about the firewire affiliation and the world of popouts- that's more legitimately controversial, in my opinion.

"everyone lives by selling something" -Robert Louis Stevenson

Yupp, pretty much. And the firewire thing? oh I forgot about that, there's your "valid" evidence.

So being self-employed, resulting in financial independence makes a person a sellout??
I thought that is "THE" American dream???
Are you a socialist/communist that chants while waving Chairman Maos little Red Book?? No, you are not--you live in a capitalist society in which what Slater does is normal behavior.
Grow up. BTW, surfing NEVER has been free of capitalist thinking. See Hobie, Dewey Weber, Channel Islands, all of the board makers try to make money, some more successful than others. "Soul" surfing is nice concept and great for an individual, but they buy boards as well. Even the original polynesians traded their boards for coconuts and a wahine!!

    What a deal!

Even if you build your own boards... which everyone should try to do at LEAST once... you still have to buy the materials. But at least it brings you closer to the source.

I did try, LB. In 1969, I stripped down 2 boards, a Con and a Weber, both tattered, and shaped two short boards (size then 7"10). They both looked like bent farts, so I realized then my hands and feet were made to paddle and ride, NOT shape and glass!!

I cant believe people are trying to make a buck...absolutely awful! Flurida, you are moronic.

Naw, not moronic, really. I would have to say that most of us felt that way at one time or another. Because surfing is an activity (please note I am not calling it a "sport") out in the ocean, in natures environment, we see it as something different not to be commercialized. But that horse got out of the barn "way back when".
If not for those shapers making boards for sale, how many of us would really surf?? Few.....
Finally, I wish I could have a clothing line; it would have "o barry" label!!!

Well there's your problem... you're not supposed to glass boards with your feet.

Even if you want to say guys that surf for money are sellouts, fine. You'd be wrong, but whatever...

They're calling Kelly a sellout for starting a clothing company that he does not even market to surfers. He could have easily signed another huge contract with any "surf" company. He chose not to and started a company he believes in. The exact opposite of selling out

Yup- your logic is sound. He decided to stand on his own. A valuable lesson I am sure he learned from his outstanding surfing skills. Personally, I hope he succeeds.
