I'm heading to the land of white hair and cubans (the sandwiches) later this month. Doing some fishing down in the Keys for a while before spending a few days in Delray Beach at the lady's parents' place. I was down in Delray in the summer and it was naturally like Lake Atlantic, but I've seen Boca choppy but rideable in the winter before. Anyone have any winter success in the area? I'm not brining the stick (fishing trip) but I figure if I somehow get lucky I'll steal a board like the locals do

I've seen delray pump but it's smaller than palm beach and super crowed not worth it.. You can go down the beach from delray and score if there's waves. If your surfing in a major crowd on the east coast your doing something wrong, well even though Florida is more crowed than most. I understand why there's crowds at some spots though.

Late December you'll get windchoppe or groundswell, depends on your timing, but this year probably windchoppe. Go to Nomad surf shop about 5 miles north of Delray, on A1A, in Briny Breezes. Just east of the shop is Dog Beach and Gulfstream Park. Rocky bottom but good for choppy days. If you get lucky and a swell hits there are two scenarios.

    1. Ground swell from strong cold front (usually right after New Years we get the first blast). If the wind is straight out of the north, Delray will go off. South Delray is crowded, but go a couple miles south (PM me) and I know a good break that can handle size, and where to find the rip to paddle out. If you don't know where the rip is you will get swept down to Boca.

    2. Bounce swell from strong NW winds hit the Bahama Banks and or the Gulfstream current and ricochet into south Palm Beach County, usually from Lake Worth to Boca/Deerfield. Its hit or miss, depending on the angle,it can be almost flat and then three miles south it could be firing. You just have to scout around.

    Good luck and Happy Horridayz!

Gracias amigos! SIS I'll hit you up when I'm in the vicinity, thanks for the lowdown. Last time I was up there it was complete winde choppe but the idea of scoring anything in anything other than a 5/4 has me giggling like a schoolgirl. And you bet zero! I'll have 4 days to catch my limit and be forced to practice "fillet and release" come 2016....

First fish I ever caught (8 yrs old) was a grouper, down in PR.
My grandmother cooked it up for all of us in the family.
