Gotta a desk job, but I'm very fortunate in that my office is on a Navy base that's right on the beach.

I work in Neptune, NJ which is 5 min from the beach in AP. I have a boss who requires 24 hours notice before I take a day off or a few hours off. Its not a bad deal.

I have a desk, but no job. I am even happier.

But I am bored, and looking for a job; retirement sucks.
"When you are done with the world, the world will be done with you." Was it Janis Joplin that sang that??

I love a good desk job, but only if you own the company.

I was thinking about this exact thread after reading the Abbey quote. I guess I would rather be at this desk job versus working in the elements day in and day out. However, to Abbey's point, I constantly yearn to be out doors....in the woods, mountains, beach, surfing, fishing, working in my yard/garden. Nature has a way of making me feel connected (to what I am not sure...myself maybe....not to get to heady). Surfing a wave is the ultimate IMO but there are so many opportunities away from this desk to "enjoy life". I try not to get to weighted down by work and being chained to this damn piece of wood and plugged in but I keep telling myself that "I'm setting myself up" for the things I want to do. Next thing you know....well you know, you get old. I'm not there yet but look forward to the day I can burn this piece of wood and never look back. Until then, I milk every chance I get to catch a DP or knock off early and get out there. Being your own boss certainly helps. I am not sure I would feel the same way if I was slaving at a desk.

I have a desk job working from home now. It's nice being able to just wake up, go surf if there are waves, and then head back home and login and go to work. No commute to the office, no boss breathing over my neck, just peace and quiet.

desk jobs can kill your time in the water. desk jobs with travel are worse. i spend every other week on the road to places that are no where near the beach.

chasing a dollar is killing me.

i got the best of both worlds, as a biologist for the DOD; i split my time between being a desk jockey and running around in the woods. Even better is I have a flex time set up, so as long as I get 80 hours every two weeks, my boss doesn't care how I do it (within reason). My rule of thumb is as long as the surf is pumping and I don't have any meetings or scheduled events, i'm in the water.

That's kinda depressing, barry; but the truth (not retired, yet, but wondering). Here's another ray of existentialist sunshine for you:
    'I will die.
A small amount of people will be sad for three days.
And then they will watch tv.'

Yeah, I suppose a balance of a part-time occupation would be best. But the definition of part-time has evolved to 4hrs per day, 6 days a week, instead of 2 days X 8hrs. The former ties one down too often.
I have toyed with the idea of starting a business (not in surfing world), but as we should all know, that more than usually evolves into 80hrs/week, no vacations, self imposed slavery.
    Vexing, very vexing.......

As for dying, it cannot be that bad, "everybody is doing it!"
